The dam was built in 1900 to serve Avalon Mills and the town of Avalon. In 1911, the mill burned down and the entire town of Avalon was moved to nearby Mayodan. Houses were placed on logs and floated down the river 2 miles to Mayodan. All that remains is the dam.
