Type: Building
Status: Demolished - completely
Accessibility: - select you can park and walk into the property even if the gate is pulled together. The Daniels Gropu is building a multi story building to replace the YMCA on that property.
Recommendation: **not very exciting anymore :(

The whole place is awesome. There is an enclosed walkway across the river between the two buildings. ***The enclosed walkway from white Mill to Long Mill remains. However, repelling gear and the just in case ability to swim well is a Must have if you plan to try to get into it.

This is the original pair of mills owned by the Dan River Fabric Company. The north "Long Mill" original building was completed in 1882 and before the mortar was even dry, construction had already begun on an expanision. Eventually the Long Mill reached a large size of about 1/4 mile long. In 1909 the south mill "Mill 8" was completed and the walkway completed across the river to connect them. The river is about 1/4 mile wide between the mills and there is a large enclosed walkway above the river to connect the two mills. There is a 20-foot high dam across the river at the west end of the complex. The mill was closed in the late 1990's and all the operations moved to India. In November 2008, the smokestacks were toppled by an implosion.

Currently the mill on the north side of the river has demo crews working in it removing scrap metal. It has been condemned by the city. The mill on the south side appears to be mothballed and apparently still has power. **northside completely demolished, land sold South side has been sold more than once. Yes generated electric and alarm.
