Things were removed and burned down and it decayed into a blighted urban park, until the bridge from downtown Bridgeport burned almost completely on Father's Day, 1996. As of December 2007, a final plan is nearly approved to demolish the cottages and expand the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.
