This is a fairly large military base located about a mile outside of town. Several of the large military buildings can be seen from the highway. Most of the military buildings are located on one side of an apartment complex that is currently occupied. On the other side of the apartment complex is an abandoned neighborhood. There were around 20 houses, all exactly the same design, located on a half circle street. There was also a small playground in middle of the neighborhood area. Several of the buildings were wide open and can be entered through the door or through a window. The rest of the buildings were locked down pretty well. There were several buildings that have been turned into storage or workshops, but the rest appear to be abandoned. Almost all of the houses were wide open, but for the most part they are empty and exactly the same on the inside. Most of the buildings are in plain site, but there is as least one in a wooded area behind a barbed wire fence. There may be other buildings in the woods; the area around the base is mostly trees and open fields surrounded by barbed wire. This place has sat abandoned for as long as I can remember, but it may be torn down soon. The neighborhood is already in the process of being torn down, and several of the military buildings have been torn down as well. It definitely was worth a look if you are in the area.

Several military buildings of different shapes and sizes. An abandoned neighborhood of about 20 houses where the people working on the base once lived. All of the old base has been torn down and replaced by apartment buildings.

I'm not too sure about the history of this location. It has been abandoned as long as I can remember. There used to be a sign in front of it that said something about a Navy Base, but the sign is now gone. There are apartment buildings right in the middle of the base and I have talked to several residents who say that they want the place torn down. There were signs put up by the residents near the abandoned neighborhood that specifically mentioned the Iowa Senators, probably in an effort to draw attention to the place, but those signs are gone now too.
