Completed in 1994 the Super K-Mart was a huge event for Amsterdam. Facing competion from Wal-Mart across the street it went out of buisness only after four years of operation. Now, this gargantuan building remains untouched (literally--there is no vandalism, surprising for Amsterdam) and unused.

As FJ said this location was closed after only four years; but it was closed after only operating four or five years.
I'm in the inventory business and am privy to some gossip.
This very nice location closed before Kmart's bankruptcy and get this; it was closed accidentally. Some bean counter got the performance numbers mixed up and guess what? Amsterdam gets closed instead of Sheboygan. Crazy. Ultimately the location may have been closed anyway. Also I think I remember sending some of my people out to do the Penske auto inventory (in the Kmart) in 2000 or maybe it was 1999. FJ is right though this thing is a white elephant. A huge building. I',m suprised the crapcan wally world doesn't move in over there.

The Kmart has been demolished and a strip mall is in the making... target, barnes and noble, applebees among the new stores. Glad it will be used for SOMETHING but it seems pretty silly to knock the whole building down, rather than repurpose it.
