History
Formed on this site; Gates Tire Company began making automobile tires; then switched production to hoses and belts primarily for GM cars. Factory operation ceased at this location in the mid-70's, but corporate offices remained on-site until the late-90's. Incidentally, at this time, Gates is the only company making belts suitable for pre-80's Cadillac hearses.

Future Plans
Late June 2012 Update:
An application for demolition has been filed with the city, and unless Gates receives historical designation, it will be torn down.

---------------

June 2012 Update:
http://washingtonp...&id=2051&Itemid=42
Gates spokesman Tom Reeve told a recent meeting of neighborhood representatives that his company intends to begin demolition of the remaining factory buildings by the end of this year.

-----------------------------

Rezoned TMU-30; currently planning commercial / residential redevelopment after environmental survey and cleanup finished.

*Update 7.17.07*
Demolition has begun on the south side of the factory. The 2-story brick section nearest the tracks had been demolished. Best guess is that the south side will be demolished first, then the north side, then the furniture warehouses on Santa Fe (also part of the Gates complex).
