Hey Fireman, I've been to just about all of the Diablo Mines, but I'm sure there are a few I havent found. mMst are short prospects, some not so deep shafts and a couple of tunnels and a smelter. Nothing big but still intersting, most of them were dug around 1863-1865. Send me a e-mail and I would be happy to share.

downhilleo definitely knows his stuff, so I'd recommend getting some info from him first. I also am up there almost every weekend (except this weekend), and know how to get to a few of them, so let me know if you and whoever else is ever interested. get ready to hike though, and expect poison oak!

Think I found that one elsewhere on UER. It's an awesome site.

USPG?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USPG

Be weary of some of the "tunnels" marked on those topo maps, because in my opinion some of them are just obese prospects. I tried going to one of them last weekend and it reminded me more of my old house's crawlspace than anything else. But yeah, most of the mining on diablo took place in Mitchell and Bagley (Back) Canyons, so there's a lot to find around there. If you see a little beaten path leading off a main trail, follow it! The official park trails are surprisingly close to some of the major mines in the area.

Firedude, theres a few short prospects in Back Creek that are pretty grown over and hard to find. Their short 30' ish, not much to see. If your going up Back Creek theirs a canyon to your left about 200' before the Meridian Ridge trail turn off, go left up the canyon and theirs a 40-50' prospect a little farther up on the left and up the hill is a shaft that I havent been to in over 20 years and forget how deep it is. They plugged all of them in Mitchell Canyon when it became parkland around 1980. Their is one shaft left about 2.5 miles up on the left side. You can see it from the road at about the 3 mile mark when the road climbs above it. The best one that I know of that you dont have to bushwhack to is on the Black Point trail off of Red Road. Turn right off Red Road and head up the Black Point trail about 1/4 mile. The trail turns real rocky from the tailings and its on the left side kind of hidden by bushes, its roughly 100' deep. If you turn left at a switchback and start climbing youve gone to far.

I just went to the one at black point! Get ready to squeeze, because the entrance is buried up to the point that there's only about a foot left to squeeze in over the pile of rubble. You might even see all the rock pushed aside from when I was just in there. But it IS literally 5 feet away from the trail. Like downhilleo said, it's RIGHT before the switchback (you'll see a rocky cliff). tah-dah

well today i made a trip through back canyon, and the prospect downhilleo directed you towards was pretty easy to find. There's a very, VERY clear path which leads straight to it, going off the trail right in front of that there canyon. I didn't really try to find the shaft farther up the hill.

I found a few more in that area, but none of them were as desirable to go in. Some of them were completely filled by erosion.

did you find a tunnel farther up back creek on the right side probably a hundred feet off the trail right before the creek splits going. there is a tunnel near the trail and if you walk up the deer trail there is a another one, on the side of the hill, just curious haven't seen it in a long time wondering if it has been filled or still open
