Yeah, I had heard something about the town recently burning down. Tragic, but not really surprising.

Is the mine structure and it's surrounding corrugated metal buildings still standing?

Every thing on the mine side of the road is still intact. Inc the store, so people can still be baffled by the Windex n ranch dressing. The fire looks like it was only 20-30 acres.

The road from the east is fine for 2wd. Coming over the mountain from the west you need 4wd (arguably). I did it in a Subaru.

Here it is in some brush on the good side of the road. It looks like someone tried to hide it. I think someone has the same idea as you.

Looks like there is still some stuff to explore. Too bad it missed the trailer of the nosy guy on the hill...

Poor thing looks like it got run over by a dump truck?

Sorry to hear about this fire, at least it didn't burn the whole place..

I believe the road from the west is closed until further notice. Believe it or not, it's due to perceived hazards from about naturally occurring asbestos. Bonus: lot's less roundtrip traffic then there used to be.

Yeah, the BLM seems to be more interested in closing all access to publicly owned lands. They use every excuse there is. How many years have people been using the area for 4x4 without health issues... and now they close it? Idiots. I seriously think that since the land is owned by the American people, we should be given full access. Much of this land was snapped up during the Clinton administration with the intent to close it off and keep it "completely natural". Insane.
