| | | U.S.S. Holland / Mothball Fleet Story < on 2/15/2010 6:28 PM >
| | | I recently finished writing a story about the U.S.S. Holland AS-32, a Submarine Tender currently docked in the Suisun Bay Mothball Fleet. The story combines historical facts, first hand accounts of a crew member I interviewed who was stationed on the ship in the 70's, as well as my experiences during my first trip to the fleet aboard this ship. Read it here! http://www.amyheiden.com/written-works [last edit 2/15/2010 6:30 PM by YouOnlyLiveOnce - edited 1 times]

Ha funny you say that, because I was trying to figure out what this "story" was called and gave it a nickname along those same lines. Thanks for reading!

| | | Great write up! I must ask: Was there over 9000 black widows on the ships? I've heard there's a lot and I'm terrified of spiders, and that's why I STILL haven't gone.

| | | Have you ever done anything on the USS Iowa? There are several on here that have a concern/interest in her, and wonder if she'll ever be restored or saved vs being sent to the scrapper. *shudder* For those that don't know her history, she was a part of the fleet that served in Pearl Harbor during the attack on Dec 7, 1941. Would love to see some shots of her and possibly a writeup like you did with the USS Holland. ----- Side note: Would it be difficult to ask the owners for a tour of her (USS Iowa), or is it a risk/liability issue that they'd have? I'd be more than willing to sign papers if need be. [last edit 2/18/2010 11:19 PM by RailGuy88 - edited 1 times]

| | | The Iowa was not launched until August of '42, so she kinda missed out on the Pearl Harbor attack in '41. She is still a Navy reserve ship subject to being recalled to service, but her most probable fate will be as a museum ship in either Stockton or at Mare Island. She is definitely safe from the scrapper's torch.

| | | In regards to the Iowa-class, I think they've all been put to rest in a somewhat permanent state. Given the current economic state of affairs with the USA, I don't think they'll be pulling the Iowa or any of her sisters back out to harbor any time soon. USS Iowa (BB-61) Decommissioned 1990. Removed from Naval Vessel Register 17 March 2006. USS New Jersey (BB-62) Decommissioned 8 February 1991. Currently a museum ship. Home Port Alliance, Camden, New Jersey. USS Missouri (BB-63) Decommissioned 1992. Museum ship as of 1998, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii USS Wisconsin (BB-64) Decommissioned 30 September 1991. Removed from Naval Vessel Register 17 March 2006. Berthed at Nauticus maritime museum, Norfolk, Virginia. I guess they're moving more toward carriers, cruisers, and submarines these days. The necessity for battleships seem to be dwindling, especially considering the nature of the USA's current foes.

I'm pretty sure that the history of these ships is enough to keep them away from the scrap heap. It'd be "Un-American" to tear apart one of these pieces of history. It'd be like tearing down the Statue Of Liberty.

I have been on U.S.S. Iowa, but only on the main deck. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll get around to doing a write-up on U.S.S. Iowa like I did for U.S.S. Holland (since I have no current, below deck photos.
As far as a tour goes, it's highly unlikely. The only people allowed to go below deck are the N.D.R.F. crew members (who are maintaining the ships) since they are working on turning the ship into a museum and there is no public access to the ships. Her current status is currently being determined. San Pedro (Port of LA) and Mare Island are "battling" over who will moor her if she is turned into a museum. The Navy has already given approval for her to move to Mare Island, however, San Pedro is trying to get the Navy to reconsider. | | | Good job, this is how UE should be done. do you just do ships, or if it's laying around a victim of time you'll be crawling over it?
