Fire Escape Ladder

I know that a fire escape ladder is used to, well, escape a building. But Could it also be used in reverse, to get up a building or into a second floor window or something?

The other night I boosted my friend onto a roof of a school, but had to wait at the bottom while he got to do all the fun stuff. There was a perfect spot where a ladder or even rope could have been fed down.

My question would be is a fire escape ladder to bulky/suspicious, and if it were to be used is it more practical then a normal old rope and some basic climbing technique?

Also, I didn't really look yet, but is there another place I should be posting this kind of thread other then in the Rookie Forum?

Thanks!

are you talking about these?

because though its a very nice idea, they're one use only.

rookie forum is fine, but use the search button first.

How is that one use only? But it doesn't matter cause that shit would suck balls to carry around....I mean I got about 50lbs of gear on me already (tripod, camera, lenses, strobe, wireless triggers, flashlight, water, tazer, first aid kit, kitchen sink) why would I wanna carry around that awkward piece of asshatness?

If I was really created in God’s image then when God was a boy he wanted to grow up to be a man, a good man, and when God was a man, a good man, he started telling the truth in order to get honest responses.

The fire escape ladders are worthless, heavy, bulky, and as mentioned above, engineered to be single use. OTOH, I have in the past made some pretty sweet, fairly slight and compact ladders using coated aircraft cable and aluminum bars for the rungs, quite helpful.

The ladder thing seems a little impractical to me. I sure you could reuse it by tie it back together or using some of the legendary tape of the duct, but you're assuming you will always have a nice ledge or something that you can set that up on is dubious at best. I would suggest something more practical like a grappling hook. It's more portable, without a doubt weighs less, and can be used in less ideal situations. While the only ones you should probably trust are not exactly cheap, if you are forced to leave it behind, you have a greater chance of retrieving something smaller and more portable at a later date. If it's lost, they can be replaced without bankrupting you.

To save you a few clicks there is already a good post that goes over grapples. Thanks to the magic of the search button (helps to know what you're looking for) I found it the thread again.

http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0

Keep in mind though, if you don't know how to use it properly, learning in an abandoned building in the middle of nowhere probably isn't the best place.

Not everyone in a group may be good climbers. When you have a group of people of varying ability... the weaker members will be often left behind. In that scenario... Entriers are what you are really looking for. Small enough to roll up into a backpack. Light enough not to add too much to your pack. One person goes in finds a suitable anchor, they tied a rope around the anchor and carabiner clips the entrier onto the rope to allow the other weaker climbers a way in.

Yeah, well since I am a rookie I haven't been venturing more then a few miles away from where I live. The high school I mentioned is literally at the end of my street.

I'm not looking to really strain myself when it comes to entering a building yet. I figured I'd take it slow after my first entrance was a little, grand, in a sense.

Plus as stated earlier by Vicarious, I'm one of the less agile Explorers. I mean I can still climb over fences and do most of the stuff required, but since I'm a little heavier then your average dude, I'm not always the first one to be hoisted up onto a roof or higher surface. To put in cheerleading terms; I'm a catcher, not a flier.

So I might start out with this ladder since I really don't carry a whole lot of gear with me (Flashlight) at the moment, I might bring the ladder along since I have it and it has remained unopened for upwards of 10 years. It will be useful while I'm still getting the hang of things, eventually I'll use something more travel friendly, but by that time I'll be posting in something other then the Rookie Forums (hopefully).

Thanks for all the advice, Guys. I'll make sure I keep it in mind. I'll also utilize this 'search' feature.

It's not easy being cheesy.

Tazer? WFT. Remind me to never cross your path in an abandonment.

Anyway, all the good locations in Maine don't require much of a climb. I was able to make it into one mill when I was a few months pregnant... It wasn't a tough climb at all. (It's ok guys, I'm very familiar with this place, I was safe!)

What I do now is have an experienced climber go in first and just open a door and I walk right in.

LOL I carry the tazer everywhere. Most the time I forget I even have it. I've never even thought of using it on anyone....unless someone offers at a party ;) but most all of them pussy out.

...aren't those illegal? Then again I'm not one to talk. I carry SAP Gloves with me a lot too. But those have as much practice use as defensive use.

I guess, but aren't most of the fun things in life? I bout it at a flea market for $40 like 4 years ago. I did some research on it a few years back and found it on a fetish site. The site said not to use it on an attacker as it will probably just piss them off. I figure if I gotta use it on someone I might as well try to get them in the neck.

Self defense with fetish stun guns.

Because the only thing better than being attacked is being attacked by someone with an erection.

I tried out the ladder. It turns out the only one we had was made of lead...

I walked 2 blocks from my house to a elementary school that was being demolished (one that I went to) at night with my friend. It turns out that we really couldn't even use the ladder at the school, although roof access was easy enough to get we still wanted to try and use it to go down, but the roof was very... flat. So there was no where to latch it onto.

I guess if I had to draw a conclusion from all this, it would be; Don't use a metal 60 pound fire escape ladder unless your in a yet to be discovered situation other then a fire that really calls for it. I would say that if there is a rope (versus chain) version of this, that might be easier. But again, you better pack another bag because I doubt any other gear will fit in the bag you use.

I have some pictures of the faithful night, and what the ladder looked like in a messenger bag.

(I'll post another thread about the school with pictures in it as soon as I can)
