Also during the late 70's and early 80's, mental health leaders thought it was a lot more humane to put patients out in to the "real world". That resulted in a huge increase in the homeless population unable to maintain their medications as they had been in the hospital.

EDIT: Ironic how a large amount of those people end up living in abandoned buildings.

There was more to it then that, and it actually started in the early 1960's when "chemical restraints" were deemed effective at controlling psychiatric disorders, and people were de-institutionalized.

I'm not exactly sure where they idea came from that individuals could be 100% relied upon to take said medication, but that coupled with various political regimes have all provided us with a huge homeless and largely mentally ill population.

PS: Regan sucks

And those in Eastern Europe have Gorbachev, where such great numbers of the population packed up and moved West once the wall fell.

And that's not a statement loaded with sarcasm, I just felt like making an astute observation.

True there. However, when places are abandoned (ie factories), that usually means people have been laid off. I've been laid off before and even though the company was run by assholes, it still sucked. I preferred to leave on my own terms. Didn't happen that way. And yeah, shit happens.

Junkyard says anyone that thinks Reagan sucks, sucks. We have an excess of military installations, Star Wars, and we ran the USSR out of money, ending the Cold War. Many cool places to see. He didn't do it all himself, no president ever does, contrary to popular belief, but he was an icon. Call me an asshole, but I like him and I like The Duke. And they got things done.

Anti-Psychotic medications are, contrary to popular belief, the worst thing to happen to mental patients since the lobotomy. They are highly ineffectual and have seriously dangerous side effects. They are developed by drug companies and tested by doctors on the payroll in order to produce the results the company wants so it can sell more terrible new miracle drugs to the people they are supposed to be helping. All that so they can make a buck. In the 1970s when neuroleptics were getting big a doctor decided to take a bunch of patients and use a method of therapy using no drugs, medications, or machines. All it was was kind people careing for the mentally ill, it was in effect Kirkbrides moral treatment. It showed results far better than any drug or therapy being used at the time. So as a result his funding was cut and it came to an end. The mentally ill dont need to be thrown drugs that cause as many problems as they solve, and turn some dangerously violent, so the state can throw them on the street. They need careing people to help them through their problems, to bring them back into reality. Drugs just dont do that, they destroy people, when neurolepics were first realised they were marketed as a "chemical lobotomy" but a few years later witha a few well managed studies and articles from doctors they were a miracle cure for lunatics. Its bullshit.

Sorry for the rant. I just really dont like mental healthcare today.

However from an explorer standpoint, hell yeah, shut down some more asylums, imma UE them shits.

many different reasons.

Houses for example - the owner dies and they either have no family, or the family does not care about the home. it just sits there until nature reclaims it.

mental homes - closed because of the treatment of the patients, asbestos, or overcrowding. same goes for hospitals. It is very expensive to knock down an old building. I know with Woodlawn school, it costs 10k just for an asbestos study.. money adds up quick. especially of the owners are broke.

various buildings in bad areas could just sit empty for decades because the area is so bad, people either fight over it for ever, or nobody wants to touch it for fear of shit happening. Baltimore MD has lots of examples of this.

I could go on, but my drinking is making me loose my train of thought.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.
