Under the ground; you can find tunnels in almost any urban area for drainage and sometimes even electrical. To find other places to explore just look around your area for a start, find places that would be interesting to explore. Start off with something that is definitely abandoned and that you don't need to worry about getting caught in. Then when you get the hang of things and get used to exploration try something a little more difficult to get into.

Just recon the area before hand to see what sort of people hang around the sire (if any) and decide what sort of equipment you will need if you get into some sort of trouble (such as falling and not being able to get up). Try to see if there are any alarms, guards, dogs, fences, or if there is any chance of being caught by someone passing by. Look for possible dangers in the building such as fire damage, missing/rusted floors, weak floor boards, holes and other things of that nature. The one thing you should be worried about is your own safety and the safety of your friends if you travel in a group. You can always take more photos or replace equipment but not the lives and limbs of you or someone else.

| | | I talked to the head hydrological engineer in my town. With some persuasion, I was able to get a map of all the drainage tunnels under the city. Check your local government facility and ask for information on your "school project"

going alone is not a good idea. if you fall through a floor and get trapped or something, you'll want someone else there to help out. ok, sometimes I do it...but I don't like to.

| | | Backroads are awesome. Take roads that look like they never get traveled. I look for houses, ag structures, empty commercial buildings, etc. I have a 25 mile commute to the next town, so I try and take different routes all the time through the farmland. Always check the same routes every so often. A house could be occupied one month and abandoned the next. I work closely with a demolition contractor adn I always call him to see if he has any leads on any jobs. This is for real, but I hear about some very cool places this way.

| | | Driving back roads is a great tip... really just keeping your eyes open all the time works well also. There's a strange abandoned house set back a little from the road I pass everyday and I never used to notice it. Great for photography. Also, watch the local papers for any news like, "The town is finally going to do something with the _________, which has been empty since 1987..." etc. Things to look for: photo ops (if you're into that)... as for a general list of cool things to explore (which vary wildly, depending on the type of location, your personal background, tastes, etc.) could include: tunnels, rooftops, items left behind, and a general feel of the history of the place. Being in a room in an abandoned state hospital, reflecting on what may have happened in that exact spot 10, 50, 100 years ago... it can be creepy, sad, hopeful... it helps if you've done research on the place before you go, so you've got a sense of the goings on the location. Above all, have fun and be careful. Happy UEing.

| | | Try to find larger more interesting places, mills, malls, hospitals, prisons, hotels, stuff like that usually makes a good exploration. It kind of depends where you live, where I live, I can't drive anywhere without passing by an abandoned mill.

Well Maverick, check out some of the UER web sites out there. They have some safety info on them. Or use the search function here to search for safety. Shit, I'm new to this, and wasn't even planning on getting into UER stuff but even I know that. Maybe fill in your location details on your profile so people can tell you if there are people around you that you can hook up with. It is okay, no one but the FBI, NSA, CIA, RCMP, MI5, ASIO and your mom will know where you are. Try googling urban exploration safety. I did. I found some good stuff, and some wanky stuff. You would think the wikipedia page might have something about safety on it.
Caution! This user is a wise ass and may use sarcasm. Is my back pack good enough for UERing? |

| | | Sometimes if you want to find a way underground to UER you can just surf around and see if there are any UERing groups in your area. Then maybe you can meet up with them... alternatively if you like to UER by yourself, maybe you can strap on some UER boots and find where a stream dumps out, and go up the tunnel. My favorite things to find in UER sites are control panels, hidden passages, manlifts and really old computers.
