Innocent exploring vs. malicious destruction........

My question is this: If a location isn't locked up and you can gain access by walking in or around something (i.e. no actual breaking and entering) and you are only there to explore and photograph, can you REALLY get into trouble with property owner/cops/security/etc?

I guess that is trespassing, but why would someone care? Especially if you are not destroying anything or doing anything malicious....it is just innocent curiosity!

I just think that if people go somewhere with no malicious intent and leave everything as it was, what is the problem with that?

I wanted to note that I have never gotten in trouble at all for exploring....I guess it helps that I am a female (sorry guys!)

But my boyfriend is always telling me not to go into places because he thinks I will get hurt, get caught, etc. I understand the potential for getting hurt, so that's why I tell him he should go with me, but he hardly ever will.

If there are any people in Atlanta interested in going with me to some locations, please email me....I would love to have someone with me!

There are a couple locations that just went vacant .....where on the site do I post the locations?

Thanks!
D.

No problem. Nothing wrong with it, other than the fact that it is illegal.

Just create a thread and post pictures. You want to avoid posting names and exact locations because cops, guards, and metal scrappers look at this site as well. Everybody wants to avoid all three if possible.

One of the reasons people don't like other people on their property is insurance liability.

If you're on their property, and an old wall falls on you, it's the owner's responsibility, and do you think they'd like to have to pay your hospital bills?

yeah, lawsuits are really fucked up these days. People will sue for anything. Remember the judge who wanted 50 million from a dry cleaners who lost his pants? He lost the case tho and he got fired

Well, I would say that some of the property owners don't really care, but they are afraid of being sued for something that you (the explorer) could and up doing on accident (getting hurt). Some people will do anything for money, and it does not matter who is hurt in the process. also, I do not think I would like people walking around in something that I own without my concent.

While you make some decent points, unfortunately property owners and law officials aren't going to see it in quite the same way. And even if you could come and go as you pleased without worrying about violating the law, it doesn't mean you should be any less careful.

short answer: yes, yes you can.

longer answer: depending on what you do, the trouble might be an inconvenience, pay check, or jail time.

This is how I look at it,
I'm not there to cause trouble, I dont want any trouble, but still am responsible enough to deal with trouble should it come my way.

With a little bit of social engineering you can get out of it, if not s/e a lawyer.

In all honesty, for the most part; people might not hassle you too much, if the property owner asks you to leave; then leave. same thing with security. you can run from cops, but probably wont get away.

I would stay away from anything that would get Federal charges however. The Patriot Act / 9-11 has made it a bitch in those regards...

If your lucky, you can talk your way out of it. if unlucky, a fine and community service. if really really unlucky you get to find out what exploring an active prison site is like.
But If your really lucky you wont get caught.

For me when asked "what are you doing here, kid?"
"it was a nice day, i felt like a walk, I'm sorry if i bothered you..."
usually just gets me kicked out of wherever i am, or if they are nice they give me local history on the area.

I WOULDN'T give the Cop the line "oh i was just urban exploring" If doesnt know what it is, that wont help you,and makes things worse if he did. Make something up, find an excuse to be there.

more thought out
"what were you doing in there"
"well i was photographing birds"
"what? in there?"
"well no, but i followed what appeared to be an eagle who flew to the top of that mill"
"i really wanted a picture of him, but he flew away before i could get close"
"ahh get out of here"
*helps if you actually photographed a few birds*

simple
"my car keys fell down the drain"

or play on sympathy...evil but effective.

"my dog jumped out of my car window ran off after a squirrel when i stopped at the stop sign, i though he ran into here and i can't find him, im sorry officer but he is just a puppy... *fakes tears*" T.T "okay why don't we file a missing animal report with the dog pound"...sucker

but yes you can get in trouble. But can avoid it too, with a little quick thinking.

"No risk, no reward, no fun."
"Go all the way or walk away"
escensi omnis...

Generally if you can walk in (no fence climbing, etc.), and it's not posted to code, it's not trespassing.

Trespassing it's self many times isn't an enforced law unless other damage is done. Avoid damaging the site, take only pictures, and don't post info that will cause the site owners or cops headaches.

I know in a lot of cases there has to be a deterrent of some sort. (I.E. No trespassing signs, fence, etc...)

Property owners are liable if you are hurt in their building. Therefore, even though it seems like "nobody would care" Trust me, the right people do. And therefore, if you are caught, depending on the people you are dealing with, some will try to make an example out of you to help detur more visitors and read: more possible accidents.
