Death Valley 2008

Hey all,

I guess ill be spearheading the 2008 trip with the help of those who were there for the 2007 Death Valley trip (see event thing in my profile). There are some very important things we need to decide on.

1) Date. Early March was great in my opinion. If we could choose a date in Feb or very early March, i think that would be the best time to visit Death Valley. My choice is Friday Feb 29 - Sunday March 2.

2) Attractions. We should start setting an agenda so we can move forward with other aspects of the trip. I'm pretty sure that we could all go as a group to each chosen location and everybody will be happy. It worked last trip.

3) Campground. Last year was a little mixed up with the group splitting up into 2 separate campsites in the campground. I'm sure whoever makes the effort to be there, is gonna want to socialize. Therefore i think we should all camp together in the same site this year. I feel the campground should be chosen given which locations we are going to be visiting. Our last campground at Furnace Creek was fine with me, although we did have to do a bit of driving to and from locations. Maybe Tunnelbug can take this one up so we can get our reservations and payment in? http://www.nps.gov...rvisit/camping.htm

4) Transportation. I know not everybody has one, but a high clearance 4x4 is almost mandatory. If we plan on hitting Goler Wash for example, only a capable 4x4 truck or SUV is going to get us there. I volunteer my Pathfinder to carry a couple of people, it being offered first to the people who were with me last time. If JBuss makes this trip, im sure he can accommodate a few souls (sorry for volunteering ya). Hopefully we get more 4x4 trucks/SUV's on this trip. http://www.nps.gov...ntry%20Roads-2.pdf

5) Food. Lets make a shopping list where everybody brings something. We should eat and drink good out there.

6) Shelter. I have a large tent that could sleep 2 with an attached pup tent that for sure sleeps 1. Ill have to look in the garage, i might have another tent. Everyone should have a winter sleeping bag, or a warm blanket at least.

I guess thats it for now. Lets just get all this crap out of the way. If you would like to help out with something or have any info to share, please do so.

I'll look into camping reservations. One site, right? I imagine we'll want to camp closer to Goler Wash and The Treasure mine this time (more on the south end of Death Valley). I'll look into options.

We may not have showers, so if you absolutely must have showers, please let me know...

In fact, I'm not even sure if Furnace Creek even has showers...

Cheers,
J

Furnace Creek doesnt have showers. We did fine without them this past year. You never know what might happen, so we might wanna bring some portable hanging showers this year. Ill buy 2 and bring them with if anyone wants to use them. This way we can shower if need be.

From $7.99 to $20 on ebay
http://search.ebay...+shower&category0=

Ive also started recruiting a couple of serious 4x4'ers here on UER. Im going to try to have everyone carrying at least 5 gallons of water on their rig

Damn.

Well, if we by chance have a break in the snow, I'd love to come. This link may help pick camp spots:

http://www.nps.gov...rvisit/camping.htm

Most of the campgrounds have water, so you can at least take an ass bath. Watch the open dates carefully. Some of the best spots aren't open at certain times.

Double damn. Ya'll have fun. Somebody get underground for me this time, and get some pics!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

I'm in, and probably my boyfriend too. Showers, whatever. There were hoses connected to random spigots. Those'll do. It's just a weekend. We can all stink equally and we'll cancel each other out.

Sounds great!

Will make sure that I get that weekend off for sure.

I have a tent with extra space, but don't have a high clearance car. Any chance I could get a ride with someone from around LA?

Really looking forward to this.

Later in march will work better for me. My boss is pretty easy going, just have to give him notice that I'll be gone.

I have spring break march 17-23. Those dates would be ideal for me.

Very cool pics, jokeplayer. I recognize two of those pics as being from the Saline Valley Salt Tram, I've wanted to visit that site since I first heard about it. Are the first two pictures also from mines in the Saline Valley? Thanks for sharing.

I'll be able to make it, and I'm good to go 4x4-wise.

Later in march would work better though.

Good thing you mention that. Weekends with a full moon are Feb 22-24 (phasing out), March 21-23 (optimum full moon). http://stardate.or...moon.css&Submit=Go

We could go ahead and solidify March 21-23 2008 since its a full moon right in the middle of its full cycle. We also have more people voting for later in March. How about it, opinions?

Late March sounds good.

Later in march sounds better for me. Full moon is a must! Shot number #2 was taken with a full moon - hence the amount of color and the shadow on the ground. Number one was a long exposure with a propane lantern on the opposite side of the post and some LED flashlight fill, that's what left the blue tint on the camera's side of the beams.

The first two shots were taken at the tail end of the valley that the racetrack is in. We took Lippencot Mine road up to that site from the valley to the west, but I think Lippencot mine itself might have been the mine on the next peak to the north of us. I'm horrible with the names of geographic features down there.
