Amusement park UE? Disney World, anyone?
< on 1/1/2006 9:56 AM >

I'm curious [of course, we already knew that; that's pretty much why I'm a member of this forum]. Is anyone here very experienced in the infiltration/exploration of active amusement parks?

I was in Disney recently, and though I didn't explore much [I was with my family, so I didn't want to risk being kicked out of the park], there were definitely plenty of behind-the-scenes spots I'd like to access. Everyone has heard of the secret underground tunnel systems and such...apparently they even offer a tour, but that doesn't quite count as exploration.

What are the risks involved in this type of exploration? I imagine multimillion-dollar enterprises wouldn't want you holding them at fault if you're hurt, so security would be tight. I also took notice of a lot of doors with complicated-looking locks. How difficult is amusement park infiltration...and if you're successful, what is there to see?

There's always the abandoned water park at Disney. Myself and a few others did that one last December of '04.

PM me for details.

i would imagine infiltrating an active disney park is asking for arrest. they'll have security like the pentagon. my suggestion is to stick to the abandoned parks

You have to sneak in during the offseason when they are closed. Sneaking around an active amusement park is insane.

I figured that might be the case, which is why I didn't exactly explore much...I do wonder to what extent one might explore while pretending to be lost, though.

What about lesser-known parks, with less security? Perhaps that question would be better off in the main forum, though.

Busch Gardens wasn't all that good at spotting non workers when I worked there. I don't know how many times I went there out of uniform just to ride rides and used all of the employee shortcuts without showing my badge once. But Busch uses Tampa PD. Disney uses its own police force so I'd be uber careful with that. And most parks I know of don't ever close. Only the northern ones really do that.

You can probably get pretty far with that if you just pretend to be an uber-tourist. Tourists are notorious for getting lost easily, even in theme parks. I do remember reading about someone exploring Disney World but that was several years ago, I'll see if I can find a link.

Yup, only the water parks close in the wintertime down here Disneyland. They typically reopen around March but keep in mind that there is still staff there running security and maintenance/upgrade tasks.

Buena Vista PD (Disney) deal with troublemakers (kids jumping off rides, sex on mr toads wild ride) pretty frequently. They are a strange lot and there's been some issues with coverups, but usually only with bigger cases such as deaths or rapes. Can't tarnish the family image and all that. Usually they'll just toss you out of the park or throw you in a holding cell for handoff to the "outside disney" law enforcement. The deal that Walt cut with Florida back in the 60s is nothing short of absolutely astonishing.

** edit **

You know, I just checked wiki and it stated that there is no police force in the Reedy Creek District. Which pretty much disagrees with everything I've read on the Corporate City of Buena Vista (Population: 16). I'm imagining that while not technically called a Police Force, they pretty much are one in practice since they pull over speeders and the like.

Have you been to Six Flags Over Georgia lately? You could probably climb around on the coasters and they'd be too lazy to even look twice at you.

Knowing because I used to work there. Disney there is a lot to explore. But if you are going to do it be VERY careful. There is a lot to get into and since 9-11 security is at its height. Right after 9-11 on all of the entrances to the park via road, they placed concrete road blocks that sink down into the ground to let vehicles in. So they spent some money and that was just in things that I could see. They require all employees to wear their swipe cars around there necks so its visible, and there is security / cameras everywhere. I'm not sayin to not go for it just be prepared to do some explaining because you will get caught. The I'm lost might work tho. They are open 24/7 too.

I've got quite a bit of experience with this sort of thing. I've done many of the parks several times with no consequences. I did do my homework though, there was a fair bit of research involved including socially engineering info from park employees and ex-employees, studying maps and aerial photographs, etc. There is TONS of stuff to see and if you are confident and have an idea of where you are going/what you are gonna do, you can get away with alot. I will say that Disney security is quite serious and not something to be taken lightly. I had no sort of pass or ID so I had to be extra sure to follow several rules that park employees are held to, learn some of the slang terms they use to refer to stuff, and modify my appearance to match park regulations. I even have pictures of a bit of it although I will not post them here in public. Here are some of the things I've done/seen:

Islands Of Adventure/Universal Studios: I've pretty much seen/done everything at this place.

  • Walked around the entire back lot on foot and employee shuttle busses.
  • Been in the main administration building for the park.
  • Had a snack at the employee cafeteria.
  • Been in the mech areas and roof (amazing view!) of the jurassic Park River Ride.
  • Been under the stage and in the prop areas at the Sinbad's show set.
  • Been inside the abandoned ride in the Dr. Seuss area.
  • Been in all the back areas for the Jaws ride, and got to see the huge propane tanks for the explosions and the boathouse.
  • Seen some of the active production studios.
  • Seen the ride graveyard with vehicles and props from old rides.

I was nearly caught on one of my trips while I was leaving the employee areas, but I managed to run back into a public area and disappear into a crowd.

Disney's River Country: This is an abandoned water park that I've explored a few times, once at Sexfest last year and again on a subsequent trip. Pretty boring overall, just alot of dry water slides, a giant wave pool, some bigass pumps and a sweet view across Bay Lake. We watched some nice fireworks across the lake from atop the highest slide which was themed to look like a mountain of rocks.

Disney's Discovery Island: This is an abandoned zoo/nature center that sits in the center of Bay Lake. It's been abandoned since about 2000 and was pretty much just left to rot after they removed *some* of the more dangerous animals. Think Jurassic Park Site B, but instead of dinosaurs, tons and tons of birds. This place is only accessible by boat and is on a heavily patrolled lake with tons of regular boat traffic. We had to do alot of planning and take some relatively extreme measures to make it to this place without being seen/caught. Well worth it though, there were pretty much no signs of anyone other than park employees being there since it closed and the place was absolutely filled with all sorts of huge birds. We couldn't see too many of them as we went at night but we could certainly hear them moving all around us in the trees and every now and then a couple hundred would get spooked and take off all at once. We had a nice encounter with some super aggressive baby vultures (about the same size as a medium sized dog). It was a pretty intense experience and well worth it.

Disney's Magic Kingdom: Ah yes, the holy grail of theme park exploration. This was by far the most interesting and riskiest place I've done in a while. I got to see virtually all of the underground tunnel system, which is actually at the ground level, the main park is built 1 story above ground level. I had lunch at the Subway in the employee cafeteria (much cheaper than park food btw!) standing in line behind the evil queen from Snow White. The tunnels down there are HUGE and not like anything I've ever seen before. They are color coordinated depending on what area of the park you are under. The main tunnel is big enough to drive an ambulance through and I saw several cars driving around while I was down there. There are gigantic wardrobe rooms, and a really neat character shop with all the big suits for the parades. They also have very large locker rooms, and more interestingly a co-ed locker room that interconnects the mens and womens sides of the normal ones. The tunnels lead to all sorts of neat places, some drop you off in back lots, some inside of the retail stores, and some even inside the employee areas of some of the rides. Security is pretty tight down there though and I wouldn't advise attempting it without doing alot of homework on which entrances are guarded, how you should behave, what to wear, and having an idea of where you are going in case you are questioned. There are cameras EVERYWHERE down there as well as security wandering about, you pretty much have to be on point and not look even the slightest bit suspicious the whole time you are down there. I've even heard of park security confronting employees in uniform with passes visible who had their cellphones out in the tunnels because the employee *might* have been trying to take a picture with a cameraphone of the tunnels. I'm happy to say that I did manage to sneak off a few shots by keeping my camera just barely sticking out of my pocket and being very discrete when I used it.

That's about it for major theme parks, other small ones aren't really worth mentioning. I'll be happy to answer questions about the parks and what I saw although I will NOT divulge entrance info or specifics about security procedures/measures I've witnessed in the parks. I did my homework and was able to figure out how to pull this stuff off, anyone else who is determined enough and willing to take the risk could do the same. The information needed is out there.

Contrary to popular belief, Disney does not have it's own police force. It does have it's own Fire Department though (Reedy Creek Improvement District). However, there are different types of security. They have the uniformed guys you see walking around in the funny hats and drive in the vans with blue/yellow stripes. There are plain clothed security officers patroling the parks looking like guests, and even K-9 units. In addition, the Sheriff's Department has a sector of deputies dedicated to the attractions areas, including Disney and Sea World. There are undercover cops who patrol the parks as well (Orlando Police does the same with Universal Studios).

Shane is pretty much correct: The security is tight (visibly and what you don't know is there); You will be challenged sooner or later. Walking around like a lost guest will actually get you caught faster, because they look for that. You'd have to walk around like you are supposed to be there; And since Disney is a terrorist target (Mickey Mouse being such an American icon and all, blah blah blah) they take tresspassing very seriously, especially if you are where you don't belong taking pictures and are in posession of maps and research material.

If you go, just be careful and know what you are doing ahead of time!

Just a tidbit of info. THe tunnels were designed (size wise) for a single armored truck to go through. It comes a couple of times a day to pick up the money. Thats why its so large. I am sure that other wise it would be a lot smaller !

Well as said...I've done RiverCountry and some of the more offbeat things at Disney. Went through the old ride graveyard and some construction yards back during Sexfest in December '04. I've also done a few things over at Universal...mainly the JP ride, The Mummy while it was being built and the ever popular "mystery ride" in Suesslanding. Going through Earthquake is a fun experience as well.

I knew some rollerbladers who would sneak into water parks int the offseason and skate the slides.
I think water parks overall have the most potential to have fun. just grab a luge or a skateboard and ride down the water slides.
