I have not read all 5 pages so I don't know if this has been covered or not,

But the company I used to work in was in a building shared with another company, there was a door going to the loading dock that had a cardkey lock on it, (the loading dock was part of their suite) this was a pain in the ass because when we had to take out old computers or other heavy junk to the garbage we would have to haul it all over the place just to get it outside, but if we put a tape eraser up to the thing it would unlock the door. The tape eraser has an electro magnet used to erase BetaCam tapes.

No idea how it worked, but it was better than draging a broken 36" Television up two flights of stairs and down three.

I cut up an old card key a while back and I have no idea how it works, it's just a laminated loop of the stuff soft fridge magnets are made out of.

i dunno,

maybe same sized nuts&bolts

*shrugs*

it would make reentry a lot easier, just need a wrench, instead of nutsplitters, liquid N2, torches, thermite, etc, etc.

Regarding the nut-splitter... I then seal the place back up how exactly ?

Stop defeating good ideas with obvious problems!

I've gotten all caught up in just trying to get into this damn place, making it safe again after the fact has become a secondary agenda.

If someone eventually solves this problem, you'd better find King Solomon's Mines or the Arc of the Covenant or something equally spectacular under that damned panel.

I still think the best thing to do, would be show up in some generic truck, while dressed in one of those reflective vests. Jump out, put up a couple of traffic pylons behind the vehicle, very quickly go to town on the damaged tops of each bolt with a Porta-Band or Saw-z-all or something, then crank each nut off to make sure it can be done again in the future. Jump back in the truck and leave. Working fast you could do the whole thing in ten minutes. With two people, one cutting while the other cranks the nuts, you might be able to get it down to less than five.

Has any progress in any area been made from all this talk?

As for resealing the lid, if the 'nut splitter' is the type that simply uses a blade to dig into the nut, thereby giving you enought purchase to rotate it off normally, then it might be possible to reinstall said nuts.
If it actually destroys the things, yet allows you to remove the nut in its entirety, I'd remove one, and take a chunk down to the hardware store, buy the closest equivalent I could find, and use these new bolts to reseal the lid.

But you'd be skipping over the fact that the Bolt itself is mushroomed, so how would we get a new nut onto it ? eh ? eh ?

Why not just bring a set of bolt taps to rethread the bolts, and lock-tite to hold new nuts in place? You could rework the bolts over several visits until all are rethreaded (and no longer mushroomed), then remove the new nuts, and replace and lock when you're done.

Too much time...too much time!

Get yourself a bright purple spandex body suit and a gold cape. Put the letters SM on your chest and get some fancy gold boots and a mask. Also, get yourself a big ol' cutting saw and a pair of safety goggles.

Leap out from behind the bushes and fire up the saw - start cutting through the metal plate with an air of urgency... If anyone asks what you're up to just say...

"I AM SEWER MAN! GREAT PERIL AWAITS SOME POOR CHILDREN STUCK IN THE SEWER BELOW THIS GRATE! AS I AM CHAGED WITH PROTECTING THE INNOCENT IN THE SEWERS OF THIS PROVINCE I MUST NOT BE DELAYED!" keep cutting...

At least with this method you wouldn't have to worry about the miltary guys shooting you...they'd be too busy wetting themselves to aim. And, if you get arrested you'll be put in a nice soft mental istitution instead of a regular jail...Well, there's a chance you'd end up in regular jail but the outfit would keep the sodomizers at bay...<SNORT>

It took a long time to read all that...

So, I'm to assume every problem has been answered to the extent that the J-Man just doesn't know how to reseal the panel...
It's been said the hole is very near a military base, and from the pictures, I'm guessing this is some sort of picnic area???

So... here you go:
Roll up on a Saturday night, destroy the bolts, go in, take pictures, have fun, leave by 5:00 a.m.

Drive home, take a shower, change clothes, show up at the site A.S.A.P. Sunday morning with picnic stuff, that dog, and a small child (preferably a girl; definitely younger than 7). Oh, kites and Frisbees would probably help, too.

Anyway, call the military base's C.O. Call the police. Explain how you showed up to have a nice, quiet picnic with your friends and family, and some "punk kids" left this gaping hole open in the ground. You don't even know how long it's been sitting like that. Your neice (remember the kid?) could've fallen down there and gotten hurt.
Use all sorts of indignant language. Remember, you're furious. Punk teenagers just came in God knows how long ago, and opened up that hole to do God knows what (probably smoke pot), and military personnel had the audacity to overlook it for so long??? How dare they???
Threaten to call the local newspapers and TV stations.
DEMAND THAT THEY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

Guaranteed, the site will be sealed for you within 48 hours.
Might make future expeditions difficult, but hey...

Actually... shit, that's not a horrid idea.
Go there on a Sunday evening, all of the soldiers are either drunk or on liberty... not gonna be in any shape to do anything but roll over and puke a few times before passing out again... Not gonna notice that a few bolts are lying about on the ground in front of a large metal grate near their area.

statik, you're a fsxing genius... props to you.

Hey, thanks, DT...

Actually, in order for it to work, my original theory needs some refinement:

1. You'd probably need to try to trash the entrance a bit. I know, I know; that goes against ethics. But you can't blame it on nonexistant kids if the job's been done with any sort of precision. Maybe spraypaint "WestSide EastCoast Killaz, BIATCH" on the panel or something... That'd do it.

2. Indignance really isn't necessary. Calling up the base's C.O. and just saying, "look, we're here at a picnic, and one of these panels is open" would probably be better.
C.O. would probably say, "Thanks for letting me know, I'll put my privates on it as soon as possible."
If you're nice, you've got the Tom Sawyer effect going for you; they whitewash the fence for you, and all the while they think you're doing them a favor...

I just figure, if you don't have the ability to seal the grate yourself, you have to find a way to get the professionals to do it...

...I really want to know what's down there...

I think that's a pretty good idea. The only thing I wonder about is what kinda action it's going to incure. That is: If this is some rediculous labyrinth of hazardous tunnels, I can see rescue crews being called in to do a search and clear the system before they just seal this place up and potentially trap some poor SOB down there.

Though, I think it'd be slick to watch a mobilization like that, I'd personally feel bad making these folks go through all the trouble while knowing full well there's no need for it. Hopefull, whatevers under that panel wouldn't be extensive enough to require that type of response. Be that the case, I think that plan is one of your best shots.

Pixie had actually come up with that idea awhile back, before anyone posted it. My preference is to find a different way. I want to be in and out of there like the wind, nobody knowing until they read about it on my site...

To that end, i'm patient, and am continuing to look at every option. I may end up doing that if I can't come up with something else, but thats plan B for the time being.

Good thinking though guys.

As am I...

Hopefully, things work out well on your incursion... don't want you to be trapped under there because the grate was open and the wind blew it closed or whatnot.

At this point though, I'd say that keeping the 'Call the Base CO' as a contingency plan would be recommended, in case something does go down and you're not fully aware of it, or just need to get out quickly.

Jester - Any luck? It has been 2 1/2 weeks since the last post, and I was just wondering if you had gotten anywhere with the hatch yet, or thought of any new ideas to get in.

I wasn't able to get down there for a couple of weeks due to various thing (one of which was my horrible freakin wisdom teeth removal experience).
Hopefully soon, we'll be able to check it out again and try a few things...

Just a very minor update to this...

By chance, the company I work for became affiliated with another company, and yesterday I got sent to their building for a rundown of what they do. One of the things they do, is supply the types of bolts that get put into concrete...
So, I got a pretty good idea of how exactly this Cover is affixed. It has allowed me to rule out the idea of taking them out and replacing the bolts. Once they are in there, they are pretty damn solid.

First I'd like to advise against the CO idea since while you're gone, someone else might climb down there and your call could have some pretty nasty repercussions for them. Also, and this I'm assuming you've already put thought into, someone should be watching to make sure you yourself dont get sealed there.

A while back someone asked if you'd tried lifting the pannel off as it stands? I'm curious weather you have? His post pas interesting, since if the bolt is too mushroomed for the nut, couldnt it also be too mushroomed for the holes in the grate, should you remove the nut itself?

Returning to old ideas, if there is enough length remaining in the bolt, why not cut the top off or melt it back to shape? what would be stopping you from returning the nut to its place on the bolt after? should you cut it, the process of removing the nut will remove the nasty edge, therefore allowing you to return the nut to the bolt afterwards, just dont lose the thing.

good luck

sorry, but pictures in sigs are not allowed.
