Dang man Dang, not good, not good at all, especially considering what location they were accessing or trying to gain access to.

Urban explorers arrested near sewer

Curious tour city's nooks, crannies

BY MARA H. GOTTFRIED

Pioneer Press

St. Paul police officers nabbed three men professing to be "urban explorers" after they crawled out of a storm sewer near St. Paul City Hall.

Police were called about people removing a manhole cover at Kellogg Boulevard and St. Peter Street and entering a sewer system at about 11:45 p.m. Monday, said Officer Pete Crum, department spokesman.

When three men came out, officers arrested them. They told police they were urban explorers, Crum said.

Urban exploration involves "exploring the hidden, secret and forgotten nooks and crannies of society," which could include caves, old tunnels and abandoned buildings, said Mike Gilday, a local urban explorer. "More so than a hobby or activity, it's a mind-set, a curiosity or desire to explore the artificial frontiers of civilization."

Officers arrested John G. Fellman, 22, of Maplewood; Nathan D. Harkness, 22, of Arden Hills; and Luke A. Towle, 21, of Wausau, Wis., on suspicion of terroristic threats, burglary and possession of burglary tools. They were being held in the Ramsey County jail Wednesday night.

The Ramsey County attorney's office declined to charge the men, but the city attorney's office hadn't yet reviewed the case. The city still could charge the men with misdemeanor or gross misdemeanors.

St. Paul police have arrested urban explorers within the past two years at the former Schmidt brewery on West Seventh Street and a cave on the West Side bluffs. As many as 80 people actively participate in urban exploring locally, but there are an untold number of "armchair" explorers, Gilday said.

"While most authorities would doubtless prefer that none of us do what we do, I imagine most would admit, albeit grudgingly, that the irresponsible five percent of the community" causes 85 percent to 95 percent of the trouble, Gilday said.

Oh shiat, not good news. It even mentions "arm chair" explorers - something that I thought was local to this site. I wonder if they are reading UER...

Did this involve any people from this site?

Heh. Funny, she said they weren't going to run a story on it, since they hadn't been charged. Maybe it was online-only. oh well.

not sure but my mother in law saw it on the talkin picture box either last night or this morning and they hoped it wasnt me. I said "I wouldnt be stupid enough to pop a manhole on a busy ass street in downtown Saint Paul" I mean of all streets they pick Kellogg, seriously, plus they went in the same way they went out meaning they had to pop a manhole on KELLOGG from below, talk about stupid, thats a deathwish.

Also I love the armchair explorer comment, it fits the bill for a lot of people.

It turns out these guys brought tools, smokeless powder and firecrackers down there with them to try to "pry or blow open a wooden door" they had found because they wanted to "find out what was on the other side." Not too bright, especially considering this was right underneath city hall.

Also..the St. Paul police just issued a press release saying these guys were part of a group called "urban invaders" not "urban explorers."

Haha. I was just going to comment about that.. Yes, let's make a terrorist attack and blow up ourselves in some Canadian storm drain! If we're lucky it may affect so that one drain doesn't work properly for a few days..

Canada? What's Canada got to do with it? This was in the capital city of Minnesota, US of A.

And, for what it's worth, "terroristic threats" are one of those things that sound a lot more ominous and menacing than they really are. See for yourself.

The relevant bit is probably this:

Whoever threatens, directly or indirectly,
to commit any crime of violence with purpose to terrorize
another or to cause evacuation of a building, place of assembly,
vehicle or facility of public transportation or otherwise to
cause serious public inconvenience, or in a reckless disregard
of the risk of causing such terror or inconvenience
may be
sentenced to imprisonment for not more than five years or to
payment of a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.

Emphasis mine. Did you read the press release from the PD? Entering a utility tunnel outside the courthouse, with gunpowder, at night, is something I'd certainly call "a reckless disregard of the risk of causing...terror or inconvenience". No, no, Officer, we were just going to blow up a door somewhere down there that we couldn't pry open...

Dumbasses. Okay?

I dunno.. Any news about UE will be bad for UE.. trying to tell people UE is good would be like telling people baby meat tastes good.. (well maybe not to that extreme, but you get my point)

Granted, the fact that they were planning to blow a door open doesn't help their case, but seriously, "lets see, what can we get away with charging these kids?"

Obviously the terrorist threat is crap, but what the hell are you going to Burgle from a drain? "I'm taking this water and theres nothing you can do to stop me!" Unless they had enough explosive to blast their way into the local bank vault. Now I think we got a good case against them...

Regardless of how ridiculous the charges are, these kids are still dumb as all hell.

Blame it on the media. They weren't in a drain, they were in a utility tunnel, one which, yes, does connect to buildings. Buildings like city hall, and the courthouse. There aren't a lot of doors to blow up in our storm sewers...

They were trying to break into a non-residential building. They admitted as much. That's pretty much the definition of burglary, and with that, nearly anything can be a burglary tool.

I think if you were found under a courthouse with explosives before 9/11, you'd probably be suspected of terrorism. National paranoia doesn't change the fact that some activities have always looked really bad, and have always been really stupid.

I'm suprised many people overlooked this simple fact: They were in a *utility tunnel*, NOT a storm drain/sewer/whatever you call it. They were also under important structures that would have been labeled a *terroristic* threat before and after 9/11. They brought all their shit with them, they should accept the responsibility for their actions; being caught with potential explosives is a no-no in anyone's book, and trying to set them off below a courthouse, for example, is going to land you in a pound-me-in-the-ass prison whether it was before 9/11 or not on charges of terroristic threatening.

I just laugh every time I think of them piling up a mound of smokeless powder and using a firecracker as a fuse. The next frame pops into mind when the firecracker fuse burns fast and leaves a circle of now hairless, eyebrowless dumbass people looking bewildered at what happened and why it didnt work. They obviously had no clue about explosives or they would have been charged with having pipe bombs or something rather than simply powder and firecrackers. They should have called themselves the Keystone Explorers.
