It's easier to control a nation that fears?

Pretty much.. and sadly most people blindly go with it because of some false sense of security.

How did it get this bad? In the 80s, Urban Spelunking was at its hight what with the Cave Clan and all, but all of a sudden we're getting caught doing things that people have been doing for years. Is it just more people taking up the hobby? Is it this website? Maybe they should block this site from google searches, and we could reccommend it to friends? Or maybe you could access it by links on other sites like Infiltration? This really sucks. Somehow, I doubt Max Action could shut down the entire city. He might know where utility tunnels are, but I doubt he knows which fiber optics to cut, etc. Like I said, this sucks.

I don't belive that was a quote from Max, but from one of the two media whores who spoke to the papers.

The "shut the city down" quote was from Professor Greg Brick, who, I'm fairly certain, could shut down downtown for a few hours, if he set his mind to it. Thankfully, he doesn't seem like the sort of person to do that, though I doubt his mentioning it has made him many friends...

yes, and call me an idiot, but it seems to me that making that sort of a statement in a public newspaper does nothing but bring ill temper towards people that do what we do. and for the people not in the twin cities, or folks who didn't pick up the paper this morning, this article was on the front page of the metro section. took up damn near the whole page! and then, to top it all off, right after we have one city completely wiped out by a natural disaster, and post 9/11, some guy comes along and says I could shut down your entire city with some tin foil and a pair of wire snips, what does that leave people to believe?!? who in their right minds WOULDN'T be scared of so called 'urban explorers'?I'm sure to us this guy may appear as a god or something, maybe we don't like him at all, and maybe he has some grand scheme on why everytime there is an article about urban exploring he has a quote in it, but gimme a freakin break, man. all the negative attention he is drawing does nothing but hurt the entire community of us.

BUT, at least he didn't get caught bringing useless explosives into a tunnel underneath of city hall. those guys......

When we started exploring, we used the media to gain new members. New members lead to new locations.

When we do media interviews nowadays (which is hardly ever) it is with selected media and we always direct the stories away from terrorism. We never mention bridges or service tunnels any more. Our website is being updated to remove all links/references to anything that might be deemed a threat.

At the moment I wouldn't do a media interview with the mainstream media at all.

Thanks,

Doug

This just stinks. It almost (almost) makes me want to support the War on Terror just so that it can be oveer and we can get back to exploring Utility Tunnels without always looking over our shoulder.

Wow after reading that Star Trib article I have to admit: you guys up there in MN are hosed. They will bust you now for even looking in a drain (or frickin util tunnel whatever, its all the same to the street level cop)

If you do some snooping around you can probably confirm this. By now every state agency and many of the Feds have been briefed and received bulletins on this new wave of potential terrorists called The Urban Invaders. These municipal departments get more money for handling more threats so they can buy that shiney new APC or some state of the art lasers for their MP5s. You bet theyre gonna play it up and make a big deal out of it.

Probably too late to do anything about it, or is it???

as that 'could help', I personally think any publicity is a bad thing at the moment.. It's not really a hobby where people who dont do it will find the worth or doing.. Anyways people assume the worse always now, everyone all on thier toes and anal..

Hi Guys.

On the subject of the media - you might want to check this out ?

Into The Darkness; Urban Explorers (in production 2005)
"INTO THE DARKNESS: URBAN EXPLORERS” delves into the world of urban exploration, a growing sub-culture of adventure-seekers from around the world who explore where most "normal people" would never go. After watching this documentary, you’ll never look at a manhole cover the same!

Features a well known explorer who hasn't updated their site since back in the day.

No, but if you stay silent and some guy that robs the sites blind, strip mining places gives the interview then it's no different than hiding. When that reporter comes knocking, a story is going to be written, with or without you. Even if every explorer you know says "no", the reporter will find some assclown to do the interview. I'd rather hold my fate in my own hands and get the message I'd rather have heard out there, instead of what happened when I just stayed silent.

Who is that? There are like a dozen explorers featured, both well known and not.

Max who ?

Max Action (?)

That documentary looks OK, from what was said on the website. I was a little amused that a documentary about UE was in a page with a documentary on wannabe amputees

Yeah, I meant Max Action, infamous head of Action Squad, the hard-partying, mullet-sporting rebel who seems to have come down with a bad case of an adult-onset allergy to website updates a girlfriend.

Also, the "preferred" URL for Melody's film is http://www.urbanexplorersfilm.com , though you'll have to follow the link back to frozenfeetfilms to see the trailer/teaser/whatever for the film... Mind you, it's in some sort of Quicktime format, so I haven't actually seen it...
