Hi, all

New to the forums but have been poking around east bay abandoned places for some time to do do photography. Anyway, just heard this last week that there is an on-site caretaker at Oakland Amtrak, who's actually pretty friendly, and may even let folks in when he's there. If you run into him and keep your cool, he'll probably welcome you into the place--sounds like he's pretty lonely.

Yeah, but at least you didn't have to listen to the guy try to convert you, which seems to be the price of admission. I'll take barbed wire over that any day...

hey, eR1c-

Is this footage recent? I'm wondering how the place handled all the rain.

Thx

nope, this was from my visit back in September...

I know that the Preidio Hospital suffered a lot of rain in the basement area ....it put a stop to my exploring last week!

The Amtrak station combo no longer works. I think the caretaker changed the numbers . Did somebody forget to shut the padlock behind them!? I noticed there was a fairly recent champagne bottle inside. Rain hasn't done much to the place. It's nicely sealed.

On the bright side, seany, his roommate, and I squeezed in the other day. It's a jewel. Nice photogenic place. Not much to see, but what there is to see is great.

Has anyone seen E40's latest music video? It looks like portions were filmed inside the station.

I went back Friday after work...not knowing the padlock combo had been changed; didn't feel like trying to squeeze by the razor wire in my work clothes.

run faster!

That fountain sign is fantastic. Great shots that really give one a sense of the abandonment while at the same time a taste of what it must have been like in it's hayday.

I hope the preserve this for it's architecture - it's like a time capsule.

BTW, I'd love to see those cartoons up close. Very interesting.

Cheers

wow. that abandonment is gorgeous. it certainly looks like if i want to do any serious UEing i'm going to have to make the drive to the bay area. i pretty much know of everything out here, and there's not really anything remotely close to some of the things i've seen posted from the bay.

out there in the world right now, someone is exploring...

yeah, half of the the tell me when to go video was shot there. All the dancing was done inside, and all the "sideshow" stuff was filmed out in the parking lot.

I would suggest just getting in though the truck yard that is next door, that way you don't have to deal with the barbed wire or the traffic...

on the presidio... i went 2 weeks ago, and got chased off by both of the security guards... I'm planning on returning on Friday, i hope i don't run into the alarm system.... if i can actually get past the damn 60 year old guard.

Last time I was at presidio about four months ago, the alarms were apparently disabled or broken, but just so you know: one is located on the main stairwell, and one is in the basement.

The movie Rent had some scenes filmed in the Oakland Amtrak station. You can see the same window in the background of this movie still as the one from http://www.multipl...allery/exploration

Hi all. Was doing a normal Google search for So. Pac. trains in the area and came across these. Thought y'all might enjoy them.

Note: The interior is pretty much the same as the San Jose and Sacramento Stations. FYI.

Ryan, you seriously always find the best historical photos online. I'm going to have to get some google search tips from you because I rarely come across anything that good.

As I mentioned in your Sac post and I will in this one... I love the Southern Pacific Lines, and enjoy trains to it's fullest. I'm what people call a "foamer". A term that means that I'm really into trains and can't stop thinking about them.

Today, I just visited the College Park Yard in San Jose, and they turned it into a Target Supermall. I detest it and won't ever shop there (the mall), because they ripped out a piece of history for more shops ($$).

I also visited the Newhall Yard and the Cahill Yard in San Jose. Still the same, but with some minor changes to the railroad lines and directions.

I guess when you know what you want, and what you know what you're looking for, it's easy to find the right picture or website. And anytime anyone wants to know more about the SJ history of the SP line, just ask. I'm always ready to explore and talk about it with you.

some news from Oakland Tribune concerning the station, new housing in the surrounding area and the answer to a riddle of why they didn't do a tear down of the warehouse that backsides the freeway:
