A few questions for any Floridian explorers.

First of all, I'm new here. I've only been involved in urban exploration for a few months, and thanks to my location, I've been mostly limited to small places like gas stations.

Recently, I've been researching abandoned buildings throughout Florida, and I've found a few that interest me. If anyone has heard of/been to any of the following places, tell me what you know. As a beginner, I need all the help I can get.

Loral American Beryllium Plant [near Bradenton - not sure how safe it is, but we're going to check this one out tomorrow]
Popash School [Wauchula]
Xanadu [Kissimmee]
Splendid China [near Orlando?]
"Devil's School" [Jacksonville]
Sunland Hospital [Tallahassee]

I'd also appreciate suggestions for other areas to explore, if you've got any.

Unfortunately I can not help you with any of the Florida locations other than Jacksonville and "The Devil's School" AKA School No. 4

It's been sold to a local real estate developer who promptly put a 6 foot fence around it with razor wire and all, at least part time security, moderate police patrol, sufficiently boarded up windows/doors and REALLY bright halogen security lights for when it gets dark.

It's also VERY unsafe. The floors are in bad shape and there's a few holes big enough to drive my Honda into, and the additional floors were collapsed/unaccessible last I heard (personally it's been 3 years since I stepped in the place)

If all this sounds exciting be careful, look for a possible hole in the fence and time your entrance carefully. The guards are around randomly and the place is a beacon for 'heads and the mentally ill. It's also packed full of asbestos.

As far as the "demonic" history of the school, nothing has ever been documented about any bizarre events happening there other than high school tomfoolery, hobos, and general hysteria over a very large school being closed down and in plain view from I-95. As far as city records indicate it was closed due to being old and full of asbestos.

If you plan on coming up to Jacksonville, there's a few spots that are worth it. Namely the old Ford Plant and the abandoned Hospital For Colored downtown.

Didn't mean to get to long winded there.

Muse over and out.

Thanks. If I tried to get into the school, I'd probably only wander around the first floor for a very short time. It does sound like the most dangerous place I have on my list.

These other places you've mentioned, however, definitely make a trip up to Jacksonville worth my time.

And I don't mind long-windedness; I talk a lot myself.

Hey I moved from Sarasota last year...

How long have you lived there?

Sota' used to have quite a bit. The ringling towers that they tore down for the Ritz Carlton, the closed down old Memorial Hospital (The Palms, rumored was bulldozed to the hundreds of reported hauntings there. Place was CREEPY) behind the previous one (torn down last year). There's an abandoned train station out east by I-75. Theres a building facing the Quay in downtown that's about five stories and abandoned, all boarded up, has been for years. Never found a way in. Speaking of the Quay, that's due to be closed soon. Not sure how long it will be abandoned but would be fun to explore the floors, it's fifteen stories.

Theres a whole bunch of little mini apartments and homes on the bay, by downtown and before Lido Beach/St. Armands circle that are abandoned on the left hand side just after Marina Jacks.

If you go to Myakka, there are a few abandoned farms in Myakka estates.

The whole old dump is out there too, also completely abandoned and has been for a while. (DANGEROUS, chemical fires burning for years here)

By Burns court cinema is an abandoned complex of apartments, hard to get to.

Used to be a 20 story hotel out on Siesta Key that was abandoned, the big round one. Torn down a while back. It was attached to a giant ground motel that was also leveled.

I also forgot about Tallahassee and it's infamous still standing Sunland.

Do a google for "Sunland Tallahassee" there is a young lady on the internet who has posted a lot of information (some of it a little toward the ghost hunting side) about Sunland. It also has detailed maps and pretty good instructions on how to get in and out and not get caught.

That's it that I can think of for FL right now. At least that are worth mentioning.

(et cetera)

I've lived here for ten years, though I didn't start exploring around here at all until early 2005. I might be moving to North Carolina soon, which certainly has its share of abandoned things, but I'd like to get as much as I can out of this area before I leave. I can't believe how many things - like that hospital - that I've just missed by a few months.

Speaking of hospitals, someone told me that the building at the corner of Bahia Vista and Tuttle [you likely remember where that is] was the old Doctors Hospital, and it was empty for a few years before they renovated it and turned it into something else. Do you know if there's any truth to that story? I've been in the building a few times now that it's actually open to the public, and I wonder if I might find something interesting, if I were to go wandering around the area even now.

Also, could you tell me more about the apartment complex? I've been wanting to explore that kind of place for a while. I'm not sure what you mean by "hard to get to"...hard to get inside, or hard to find? I live closer to Venice, and I can't drive...I always try to find out as much as I can about a location before I go, so it won't be a pointless trip.

Those are the coordinates for a beautiful power plant in Deland, FL. I won't give you too many details, other than it's a great explore, and if you're afraid of heights, it's not the place for you.

Thanks. Heights are about the one thing I'm not afraid of, actually. And after hearing a lot of people talk about power plants...I'd really like to explore one.

Yes and no. During the day they are slowly dismantling it. But at night, it's wide open.

Hello.

I am also new to these boards as well as very new to exploring. Right now I live in the daytona area of Florida and was looking for some places to start. It seems most places that I find here and there on the internet I read posts elsewhere that describe them as already torn completely down or built over.

AbandonedSC, I made a run by your coordinates listed for the power plant (thanks) while my application to post here was still pending.. and came back with the same great question that my trip down there was supposed to solve: Where do you guys park your cars when you go exploring?

Sounds like a dumb question, but in all honesty whats the method to scope out a nonsuspicious place to park? Is it best to park out in the open or try to find a shady sopt to pull off? It looked like theres houses all around the streets there by the plant. My luck Id park on the shoulder that just happenned to be Bubba's front yard and hed call the cops or something. Theres a gas station right by the plant, but wouldnt it look kinda suspicious to park there then walk away?

Thanks guys. And happy 4th !!

Any place under a mile. There was a nearby church that proved to be a good spot for the location that AbandonedSC posted. Preferably, park amongst other cars.

It is a very, very cool place.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

Thanks for the reply.

Ill have to check it out once again sometime.

I know today it looked like there was a green cherokee and a white utility looking truck parked on the other side of the plant. I suppose people still work on that side.

Either way, I was surprized at its size. Very large. I suppose a great place to start once you get in, but im still looking for other places that are somewhat remote and not within walking distance of a major highway exit. Activity may in some ways provide some cover, but nevertheless, as for the plant i would probably go around the back to enter, opposite the road, and.. you know dont want some dude from a nearby house to call the cops.

The plant is definately on my list, though.

Nightcat81 - I was just in Daytona recently. It looked like there were a lot of empty stores and hotels around. Was that just because of recent hurricane damage, and is anything around there actually accessible?

abandonedsc - I'd love to see the gallery, but I think you've got to be level 3 to see it...are the pictures posted anywhere else?

empty buildings?

Whereat? A1A, beachside on the strip? or elsewhere?

I drive around here a lot, theres really not that much of interest.

If you remember a road or intersection i could be more specific, but generally, theres not really that many abandoned places. On the strip by the beach (A1A) most of those places are in construction, not abandoned.

Oh yes.. well, ONE place on the strip, a restaurant called the red snapper I believe, thats abandoned.. But ive driven by it SOO many times when it was open, It would almost be of no interest. Besides, I do believe that place is boarded completely (i cant tell around the back though) but im sure thats boarded too.

There might be MAYBE a couple other places. But i drive down there so much, any small store that ive seen open for years would be of little interest of me to explore.

Hotels would be cool, on the side by the beach, but like I said theres 2 that are in dismay, and I believe they are both in construction, not demolition.

That areas pretty closed quarters, police usually hiding in parking lts checking speed, but I can have a closer look next time im out there and see if theres any places worth looking into.

It was near the beach. It's possible that they were under construction, but a few of them had all the windows boarded up, so I assumed they were abandoned instead. I saw at least two or three, all fairly close to each other...unless I'm mistaken. I was stuck inside a car with my parents, who of course refused to stop, so I didn't get a very good look.

Anyway, you'd probably be better off trying to find something in another city, particularly if the police are all over that area. You're not that far from St. Augustine, are you? I really have no idea, but I would imagine there would be something of interest around there.

Do Sunland...there is also an abandoned lab across the street. My suggestion..go early on a sunday morning and check it out. you will find the opening easy. Any other time is hard because of police drivebys.

There was a ring lift plant for the Catepillar equipment in Jacksonville. It looks like it recently closed, however they also razed it shortly after closing.
