Using game cameras to scout/monitor locations

Anyone ever tried this or encountered one of these while exploring?

For years I've wanted to be a fly on the wall in an abandoned building, watching as people and animals wander through and things move around. So finally I ordered a game camera. This one has both time lapse & simultaneous passive IR trigger, so it shoots both a still shot every minute and can shoot 30 seconds of video with audio when triggered.

Shameless Amazon.com affiliate link for the camera

There are multiple potential applications of this that I can think of:

* Scouting - set it to time lapse, leave it for a week or two, then come back and see how much activity occurs & when it occurs at a location of interest. Also potentially observe patterns in security patrols or maintenance work.
* Snooping - set it to passive IR, set it up somewhere hard to see/reach inside an abandoned building, then come back a few weeks later and see who else is trespassing, and what they were doing.
* Security - on the other side of the coin, game cameras are marketed and used by people interested in securing their property. Some cameras have a camouflage finish to make them concealable; while researching it I saw a picture of one of these hidden in what looked like roadside debris, it was actually monitoring the driveway and shooting pictures of approaching vehicles.

On that note, I will be installing this at a popular upstate NY UE location this weekend, and checking back in another week or two.

Colours, LINKS, images, etc are not allowed, text and LINKS only. Emphasis mine.

Don't get caught. A few states have laws on the books that state that putting a recording device on private property without permission is an illegal wiretap. Other states are likely to wonder what in hell you "really" want to risk a ($100? I forget) camera on. "Must be a profit motive, your Honor."

Also any active IR device is easy to spot. While this is shooting or videoing it will show up like a beacon to our crowd (or the paranoid).

All interesting points. The detection on this is passive IR, but it does have active IR night vision which can be disabled. I'm pretty confident no one will notice where I plan to put it, it is quite abandoned and derelict.

It'd be fun to watch people explore. Even better, hook up hidden speakers to a microphone you have control of. That'll keep things exciting.

obviously im not you so i dont know how you plan to hide it but i feel that in 90% of the places you could put it to be effective someone would immediately notice it. my eyes are always drawn to things that do not belong. but ignoring the possibility of it being noticed i think this would be really cool to see people coming and going. especially if you saw someone notice the camera and wander up to it then maybe freak out when they realize its a camera haha.

well, if you take it apart and mount the power pack and "brains" away from the lens (extend the wires that run to the lens) you will be more able to hide it.
i did something near to this years ago to "watch" my next door "drug dealers" do thier work... and i also caught some unexpected pics...

I actually like this idea, mores using it against security and the such to monitor activity if any (such as security checks and rounds).

But it seems that everyone thinks they will be able to spot this... it gives me an idea. We should start a UE game or something where somebody hides something in a place... use pictures or hints to tell them what place it is... and see who actually can find the item. Otherwise they will be caught on camera looking like asses, which will be hilarious.

Or start a hidden camera prank show on explores... plant something weird there, and watch people's reactions to it. Like a creepy little girl crying in a corner or something, or a "dead" body... hehe

Album cover!

The music on said album should sound like this: http://www.youtube...atch?v=SIMivTD63YY

Don't worry, it's not a rickroll. It's actually ridiculously awesome, and I am standing by that viewpoint.

...Aaaaaaaaand... DERAILED.

Or, if you're really lucky, you might find some of the indigenous species exploring each other...

Eavesdropping is a lame excuse for exploring.
Recon is more entertaining.
Ever have someone pass within inches of you and never know you were there?

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

The project begins! Phase I, scouting a location. This is just intended to be a test. I installed the camera near a trail head that leads to a popular, albeit remote, UE location.

The device is considerably smaller than I expected, it's about 5" H x 4" W x 2" D. In the daylight it was actually pretty hard to see because it's set a good distance into the woods. However I drove by again a little while ago, and as I approached, the IR illuminator came to life and I could see a faint glow.

I locked the case and chained it to a tree. I think it'll be fine where it is now. However when I actually put it in an abandoned building during Phase II, I'll have to make sure it's really hard to both see AND reach. I like the decoy camera idea, btw.

I'm planning on stopping back at the camera again tonight just to dump the memory card contents because I'm dying to see what it caught even just in the late part of the day today.
