| | | Posted by danielb One of the people I explore with carries a motorola XTS5000. Usually I would have something cheaper like an HT1000/HT1250. However one advantage the XTS5000 has is can be set up with a field programming option. Yaesu and other HT's meant mostly for the amateur radio market are nice too. The small ones look very inconspicuous, like some kind of consumer 2-way radio you would get at walmart. One good thing about a programmable HT is that you can also use it to monitor public safety/police frequencies. Most police are on UHF. Just be sure to set it to receive only before you key up on their frequency by accident.
|
god help you if you do that by accident, had a friend of mine with one key up on the State Police frequency out here, dispatcher freaked out and started yelling for the "unidentified radio ID" to tell her who we were. They were pretty pissed off...

| | | Posted by subtilis I use a trunking scanner when i go look at trains and rail yards. does that count?
|
I don't feel comfortable with a transmitting device of any sort, so it's digital trunking scanner for me as well:

Wow! We are back on-topic! I'm going to amend my prior post and agree with Snow7 under some circumstances. I had said "if you need radios, your group is too large". But if it is a group "tour" of a location which does not require stealth, I can see using radios. Radios also have a couple of advantages over cellphones: 1) Just push to talk - quicker than dialing a phone number 2) the "broadcast effect" - all other radio users can hear your transmission.
