Bet he died with his heart in his throat.

Try a controlled free fall, the first hundred feet is terror, then you realize your safe. He had enough time to realize he fucked himself completely.
One of the worst things you'll ever think.

I realize that you are explaining how a free fall was in your experience.

I bet there's a chance other people experience it different then you.

Let's be real, you have a higher risk of injury/death on the drive to the crane then you do on the actual crane. There are a ton of risky, dodgy climbs I have done in the name of UE. Tower cranes, complete with their osha approved ladder cages, are quite possibly the safest locations I have ever been to.

The biggest risk you take when doing a crane is getting caught trespassing. A lot of scrappers and thieves steal shit from sites, so you do run into security from time to time and they will always assume the worst in you.

Risk verses Consequences.

The worst that can happen is you die.
Getting seriously injured.
Get tagged for B&E.
Get tagged for trespass, not near as bad as those above.
Getting yelled at doesn't mean anything.

Drinking makes you a prime candidate for the top of the list as does climbing on wet steel, or not maintaining 3 points of contact at all times.
Sooner or later the law of averages catches up with you, the dopes, the unskilled, and the careless tend have it catch up sooner.

Recognize the levels of risks, proportionally, minimize them accordingly.

You say that.... but watch any first-second-third timer step off a ledge on a giant rope swing. They all clench, no matter how cool they try to be.

We did rope jumping in highschool, the first time up the pole, I stood up, my belayer tightened up too far and pulled me off by accident; Never got a chance to be afraid. So the second, third and fourth times were easy. Then one day they had an inspector who told us we weren't using the right kind of rope for that jump (over 3 years) and the school had to stop doing that stunt; kill joys.

Rappelling is the only thing that still makes me nervous. Every time I lower myself down onto the rope I visualize the knot pulling loose. Doesn't matter if I've done it 100 times, doesn't matter if it's physically impossible for the knot to come undone ... my brain flashes me the image of the knot unraveling. Then I tell my brain to shut up and do it anyways.

Let's see your face for the first second on a safe, zero G ride. Your heart will be in your throat too.
Try it. then try X more times. The first second will always be terror.
It's hardwired into the human brain and nervous system, it's raw instinct; zero G's means big trouble.

This thread is about crane climbing, not roller coasters or rope swings.

And I'm currently riding my couch at zero G's.

The dead:

And the heart broken:
Fen Joyce (29), who was a pupil at Queen Elizabeth High School, was believed to have climbed the crane with two friends after attending an Australia Day party nearby.
His death has devastated his close-knit family, including parents Dave and Mary and brothers Morgan, Rowan, Tommy, sisters Mollie and Zoe and long-term girlfriend Yonta.
In a statement released by his family, Mr Joyce was described as an adventurer who was always saving up for his next big trip.

He had recently returned from a trip to Cambodia where he helped build a community centre for an impoverished village.
“Fen approached every situation with a passion that was rare and admirable, whether he was cooking food, figuring out a solution to a problem at work or simply talking with friends,” his family said.

“Fen walked tall, wherever he went. He never seemed to be afraid of anything and he loved to climb.”
Mr Joyce was born in Tasmania and the family settled in Australia in 2000 after spending five years in the Tyne Valley.
He embraced the seaside lifestyle, learning how to surf and making lots of friends.

“He would be the first on the dance floor and the last to leave,” his family said.
Having worked in marine construction, Mr Joyce decided to follow in the footsteps of his brother Rowan, enrolling in a bachelor of construction management course at the University of Technology in Sydney.

He finished his degree last year.
