| | | Again with getting things back on track. One of my first explores was actually a hobo camp I found by accident in the town I used to live in. There were a surprising amount of homeless for a small town and they would wander the streets alot, some were nice and some were a bit of a derelict.
Not the scariest thing out there, but it was pretty unsettling at the time. New to exploring, realizing I was invading someone's home and they had the defense if needed.

| | | This freaked the shit out of me...There were so many piles of needles everywhere of varying sizes. HUNDREDS of them. Some piles were a foot high (I think now that someone had cleaned it up, but not cleaned it out). That being said, I'd totally go back, but not without a few guys present. Skye_Ann - just a FYI, this was at the place you want to do a meet at.

Plus crackheads, homeless guys trying to beat us up with wooden table legs, pikeys scrapping copper who chased us, eastern european security guards with guns (who told us tales of shooting his friend), Iranian military police with AK-47s, more Police, guard dogs, security... the usual.

Yeah that was nuts. I'm pretty sure I remember a motion detector on those stairs and just carrying on "oh well, let's see what happens now" Exploring in SE Asia is nuts, the level of poverty and impunity of people with guns really raised the "crazy-shit-o-meter" every time I snuck into places I wasn't supposed to.
Also going into a drain for the first time with some random dude from the internet. Not usually the paranoid type, but I kept him in front of me just in case hehe.

| | | Found a grave yard at the back of a closed down reform school. We knew it was going to be there but knowing the history on the place and that beneath the soil was the bodies of children that were placed in care of the state and were brutally murdered by their "care takers" was saddening and creepy all at the same time.
Ruphuz found this in a warehouse. Not bad for her first UE trip.
Edit: We also were in another warehouse and heard a noise up at the front of the facility. Went to investigate it and found a person sitting in the corner of a dark room rocking back and forth. Didn't know if was a hobo or a college kid tweaked out on drugs. Didn't stick around long enough to find out. Scared the crap out of us. [last edit 1/18/2012 5:40 PM by Saint Jude - edited 1 times]

Actually got detained/interrogated for walking across a helipad. The exploring photos only further incriminated me... Long story short, (fortunately) still never been arrested.

| | | Cleaning out houses tsunami inundated a month or so beforehand, not more than 10m from the sea, and feeling an earthquake is an interesting experience... Especially knowing the water was five times taller than your car previously.
Driving into the Dai-ichi plant exclusion zone over earthquake damaged roads, on a rainy day, with your field meter alarm going off was a bit of a scare. Turns out we had set the threshold alarm wrong.
While potentially life-threatening, each of these in reality though was no more of an exposure than crossing the street. Just feels different at the time. Neko.

Wow your sounding just like an Aussie explorer. Well not Sydclan they are just torch nerds. Running out of batteries would be hell for them. I think the worst for me was spending the night in an abandoned prison which i use to live in the officers quarters while it was active as a kid. All the memories came flooding back scared the hell out of me.

| | | Years ago, when I was only 18 or 19, friends and I had followed a disused railway a few kilometers out of town to a big old catholic boarding school - all the kids were home for holidays. At this age we were more interested in breaking in to the canteen there and getting some ice cream and shit than doing any real exploring.. but on the way there the rails passed through some overgrown farmland, and past this big rusty windmill.. it's hard to describe the sound of this old windmill, but it haunts me to this day. It was a sort of husky grinding, reminiscent of a voice, and punctuated every few seconds with a deep thud. Some of the sound effects in silent hill come close. Anyway, that sound is still one of the most chilling things I've ever heard.
