I'm not sure about you guys but all my shots are definitely at least 1/4s or faster in low light situations, especially when using low ISO speeds. I think that comment wasn't anticipating special circumstances like dark spaces (or something like astrophotography). The combination of cameras that have extremely good high ISO performance and very good image stabilization mechanics undeniably reduce the need to use a tripod in many situations that previously required one. For the type of photography that he does (and I'd say most people), ISO + IS/VR will do the job for them most of the time I'd guess. Of course, if he is suggesting that a tripod would never be needed in any circumstance... never mind. You should have an aperture preview button on the cameras body. And you can see when looking through the lens the difference it makes when increasing and decreasing it does.
