...this is just ridiculous and somewhat stupid bravado, if you even have to think about calling for help, 9 times out of 10 you should. Or you risk causing even worse injury or even death, if i get seriously hurt while exploring and i'm on my own, i'm either driving to the ER if i can make it to my car or calling 911, i'm not willing to get myself even more hurt to prove a point.

If you were inside where that picture was taken your cell phone be worthless. If you can't take care of yourself, don't expect a wet nurse to visit you onsite. You need to be fully accountable for your actions.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

| | | Posted by shotgun mario if you were hurt in that silo (pretty confident thats the atlas outside of Roswell) you wouldn't be able to crawl out on bloody stubs either, dumbass. Think before you speak, and speak before you do.

If you're lucking your gf would call for a body removal, then again if it were you she might let it rot there for half a year first. *yawn*
Bottom line: don't count on others to save you if you do stupid shit.

| | | Posted by Fl1k3r Warning, avoid the thin black tar like roofs they have in some places, especially if it is bubbling and peeling. I was out today (pics and story will come later) in the basement of one building, and had a guy fall 3 stories in front of my group onto solid concrete, so if ever going out on roofs be VERY careful where you put your footing
|
Is this the sort of roof you're talking about? If so, I'd say that's pretty good advice. 1.

| | | that's actually basically the roofing materials and construction of the place the guy fell through, it looked more stable from above though than your pic, when you stood below it you could actually see just how little weight it could support

Yeah, you can see the materials of the roof pretty well in that photo. They're also strewn all around in the interior where they fell. The roof appears to be made of tiles of compressed fibers, held in a frame and then covered with a layer of tar or asphalt. It's basically like the building has a heavy-duty drop ceiling for a roof. On that building, the roof tiles had mostly swollen up and disintegrated, looking like clods of Spanish moss. Even if that type of roof were relatively new and intact, I wouldn't trust it to hold my weight.

yea, that's why i didn't go out on the roof, i had a gut feeling i'd get hurt. guess the guy who went out there didn't have the same feeling -.-

The way I understood him was "plan ahead for your own sake, in case you 'call' and nobody hears you". I'm very well acquainted with Mr. Murphy. I've found that 99/100 times, when you really NEED to call for help, it's not possible to do so; so arrange ahead of time for your own situations and don't ever need to make that call in the first place. Ever been on "hold" with 911 for a relatively long period of time when seconds count? I have, it blows.
But back on topic. Advice: Know your limits. Just because someone in a group does something doesn't necessarily mean that you should too. If you're a fat, out-of-shape drunk... you might not want to do the things the very fit, trained, athletic folks do. This goes hand-in-hand with following your gut-feeling, and not going against it, as previously mentioned.
Warning: Trust noone. People will sucker you into trusting them just to stab you in the back at a later time when it suits them. Be nice, make acquaintances, get to know the local exploring community; but don't assume that "because you did something awesome together", that you can trust them fully. They will eventually prove you wrong. Choose your friends wisely.
Oh, and carry your own damn water! Don't decide not to carry it cuz you want to save on weight or not be encumbered, then 4 to 10 hrs into an explore you're mooching off everyone else who made their own provisions to bring it in the first place.

Oh hi Soldat =) I think I flamed about two of your other aliases. If I ever get permabanned, I'm gonna come back as MetaPancake! Tip: if you just assume someone will come and find you, you stand a 99.999% chance of being wrong. You will probably die where you lay. Plan accordingly.

I don't have any aliases. Soldat is the German word for solider, and I was member of the German Air Force Weapon Systems Command. I think I know how to plan everything with plan A, B, C, and mostly D and if they all fail, lets try a different option.

| | | I almost kind of agree that if you get jammed up how lame is it to call 911 and tell them, "Hey, I got hurt (or stuck) doing something I shouldn't have been doing in a place I'm not supposed to be in. Can you guys come risk your lives to save me?"

| | | If you are going into an old abandoned building, always bring a respirator. My partner and I went into an abandoned nurses residence a month ago, I went in wearing a respirator. However, it was making a ton of noise, and I took it off. Since this place had old chemistry labs in it, I was immediately thinking about drug cooks. The thought of running into drug cooks made stealth more of a priority than breathing in mold spores or asbestos fibers. Since then, I have been wondering about how breathing that crap is going to affect my health in the long term.

One of the telltale signs of abandonments having drug labs in them is smell, basically anything unusual (sickly sweet, bleach, or burning smell) and these smells would have been filtered by your respirator. A simple dust mask will filter out asbestos and mold, and will still allow you to smell the enviroment around you. In that situation, you were probably better off taking the mask off, as running into a drug lab is a great way to become dead. I have, in my earlier days of urbexing, gone without a mask into environments where there is asbestos and mould, and doubt this has caused any damage to my respiratory system. Mould usually causes short term effects, and asbestos is only dangerous if it is disturbed. You should be fine.

Because, ALL respirator cartridges filter out ALL substances right? Wrong. I suggest you check up on this subject a little. The respirator is the frame, the cartridges do the work. They don't all work for everything. Many of them are relatively specific. Use them accordingly. Something that filters out particulate matter does NOT filter out bleach fumes or acid gasses or anything else you can "smell". It filters out *particulates*. It does not filter other gasses, does not supply fresh air.
