| | Hiked all 184.5 miles of the C&O Canal < on 6/28/2011 2:46 AM >
| | | It took me 15 hiking days but I made it all the was from D.C. to Cumberland, MD. I had to deal with floods, rain, mud, mosquitos, snakes, bears and was even shot at 25 +/- times by some hillbillies. I didn't take many photos but here are a few from my adventure.
1. Harper's Ferry.
2. Flooding waters. I found 4 ft. carp washed up on the trail.
3.
4. 15 days of mostly this, the green tunnel:
5. For every bridge there were at least the ruins of two other.
6.
7. I found over a dozen caves, the longest about 1200 ft. long.
8.
9.
10. I got 2 hrs. of stunning time lapse of this. Otherwise I guess it's just another bridge foundation.
11.
12. Mill dating to the 1780s.
13. Fort Federick. 1750s.
14. Canal lockhouse ruins.
15.
16. A very out of focus lock. I passed 74(?) of these.
17. Kilns
18. This is where the limestone from the Washington monument came from.
19. Paw Paw tunnel. 3600 ft. long.
20. My favorite part of the trip.
21. The longest mile.
22. That's right bitches!!!!

There was no way you could get a bad picture in there. A thick layer of mist was hanging above the water. So cool. Actually, about half these pictures have time lapse to them. I should be able to get them up shortly.

Thanks. I had to loose some weight and get some things outta my head. I'm happy to say I did both.

| | | Thank you everyone. It was definitely a lesson in pain endurance. I had never hiked more than two days in a row so this was a true learning experience. I met so many nice people on my journey. One fella even drove me 10 miles round trip to a grocery store when I ran out of food. I highly recommend it but please bike it. I was the only back packer over three weeks and I found that many days where extremely mind numbing. As for the shooting incident: 9:30 PM, second to last day. Every five or so miles there is a primitive camp site with a water pump and John. As I approached one, two miles from Old Town, MD, I noticed it was occupied. It started raining and I was debated asking the occupants if I could share the space. Suddenly pistol shots rang out. I didn't think much because it was good ol boy territory. But when they didn't stop I grew nervous. It was dark and I had my headlamp on. I then saw that the muzzle flashes were pointed in my direction and they were using my lamp as a target. I began walking away as fast as I could. The person then waked from the campsite to the trail, and accompanied by someone with a shot gun, started firing at my back. This lasted for about five minutes. About a mile and a half later my heart sank. I saw lights on the trail up ahead and figured it was the same group. What could I do? I kept walking and to much relief found it was night fishers going after cat fish. I guess I was at the main crossing point for Old Town and there were a dozen people out. When I told my story they recommended I camp there, though technically illegal, and they would watch over me for the rest of the night. I felt safe and was exhausted so there I spent the night. I have some great pictures from mile 0-30 I took in January. I'll post those this weekend here.

| | | Nice! Sounds like a lot of fun… except for the snakes, bears, rain, but for some reason, we seem to run into active munitions of some sort on 50% of our trips too! Good ‘ol Paw-Paw. They should put signs up if they don’t want you climbing those stairs!? The ranger said there’s Civil War era graffiti in there… Bob wuz here, July 1863, lol Impressive accomplishment, btw.

I'd go as far to say a lot of those photos look like screenshots from Oblivion. The rednecks could have even been highwaymen.
