| | | Been lurking peoples photos and finally decided to post my own. Is there anything I should do composition/post wise to make this shot look good? Go easy on me, I got my camera 3 weeks ago...1.

| | | I would suggest that you use your own editing program to resize instead of using the forum's resizing. You can avoid oversharp images that way. Also, could you tell what your settings were when you took the shot?

Lol, I wish! It was the charred remains from piles of books that were set on fire.

| | | I think you're going to get a bunch of people telling you what angle you 'should have' taken the shot at EVERY TIME you post on this board and should thus be prepared for a lot of bullshit advice that does nothing but cramp your own personal style. Perfecting your shots is one thing. Turning them into somebody else's idea of perfect is total fucking garbage. So just, keep 'you' in your shots when you're taking advice, kay? Because I like your stuff the way it is. ps- I'm not saying there won't be good advice, there will be GREAT advice. Just never feel bad if you liked something about a shot and somebody critiques that aspect of it.

In *my* opinion, and mine alone, I think there's too much going on in the shot. The stairs are cool, the graffiti is cool, but there's a gap in between and the eye doesn't have any clear place to go. I find that by including both, you've cropped both really tightly (or the other part wasn't in the frame.. either way). I'd kinda like to see a shot focused on the stairs alone, and maybe one on the graffiti, perhaps with the stairs in the background (depending on angles). *edit* and I didn't even notice the lonely chair at first! I'd stand that bitch up and put him front and center! But that's just my opinion. Also, I see what Adv.Pack is saying about leveling the camera to help straighten lines, but I'm a sucker for upward-angle shots, so I'd stick with them. Like Yield said, though, listen to your heart. And to Yield specifically - the thing about asking for advice, at least for me, is combining what I like doing and my style with elements that I like from others. Sometimes, super simple advice people have given me ("tilt the camera up a bit" or "lines are good") have made a huge difference in my style. So yeah, he has to take everything with a grain of salt, and incorporate advice in a way that makes sense to him. [last edit 6/26/2011 3:22 PM by iagox86 - edited 1 times]

| | | Can't wait to go back and try some new angles! Maybe I'll throw that chair in front of the graff and see how that looks. I kinda rushed when I was there last. I was trying to leave before it got hot as balls. I'll take my time next time I go.

| | | For the stairs/graf/chair shot.... This shot looks like this is the first shot you took of this subject. It feels like you had your camera in your hand, walked around the corner, saw this awesome scene and took a picture. There is nothing wrong with this. After you take that initial shot, however, walk around that area for a little while looking at the scene. Try and find alternative perspectives. Get in close.... step away... lay down on the ground... find a way to visually connect the stairs, chair and graffiti. This is where you would work in the advice that people give here like, straightening out lines, controlling exposure etc etc. (and, yeah, i know, sometimes when exploring, you have to move quickly and don't have time to get intimate with an area) Good start, though. Keep at it. Have fun with it,
