No, I definitely wouldn't try this in an urban setting. If I WERE in an urban area I would just park at the nearest store and walk over. This is miles from any public parking and riding my bike from such so I'm not out all day would probably give me the third notch on my "people don't watch for cyclists and I probably have internal damage from hitting the pavement by now" bedpost.
Parking on a side street would probably attract too much attention as well. The main highway is mostly farmland but the side streets are narrow, unmarked, and it's where all the homes are.
The only other possiblity I can think of is parking at the gas station which is miles away, and having a friend walk with me. Girl walking alone on busy road: damsel in distress/harassment target. Girl walking with friend: two people having a nice walk together. Would take an avoidably long time, though.

You could always use the "ol jogger routine". We pulled this one before for a tough place with no parking. Either have someone drop off you with all the equipment, or if you are by yourself, drop off your stuff in a nearby bush or something, then go park your car at the closest gas station or as close as possible, then throw on some headphones and enjoy the run!
It helps if you wear some jogging pants or something athletic.

I wouldn't advertise a breakdown due to what people have already mentioned. People may stop to help, or worse, your car may be a vandal target if you indicated it's broken down and you are nowhere to be found.
Best thing you can do is just park on the road as normal and sneak away. People dont; pay much attention to a vehicle that's just parked, but put the hood up, or tie a white flag to it and you may draw attention. The white flag is rarely used.
Even cops don't pay much attention to parked cars in the boonies unless they've been there awhile, then you may get a warning tag to move it, but regardless if they stop, they will likely not go searching for you in an abandonment.

I have lived in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida and I have never seen the white-flag-in-the-window-thing. In fact, I wish I DID know about it for the times I have broken down! Must be a Northeaster trick. In that case, I agree with IDChris in that a white flag would stand out way too much and you're better off just parking off the side of the road.
Are there any of those little pull off areas on the main road nearby? You could park there and if anyone asks, say you needed to get out and stretch your legs. Of course, if your town is REALLY small, I guess someone would wonder why the heck you needed to get out and stretch for a 10 minute ride across town...

You don't need any more evidence to support your story, because when you get back to your car, it'll already be "cool" and won't overheat again for another couple dozen miles.

This would actually not be a far stretch from the truth - like I said, my van is slowly falling apart, and I actually HAVE had problems with it stalling out after lots of stopping and starting. If I let it sit and cool down for a while, it will usually start back up again. if your car is non-DIS, pull the coil lead out of the distributor or coil enough to cause a misfire.
If your car is DIS, loose two spark plug wires.
Pull a fuse out of the panel for the fuel pump.
keep a compressor in the trunk and a valve stem core remover on your person... instant flat tire.
