|  | | | I do a lot more rurexing than urbexing since I live in the boonies. A lot of times an abandonment I'm interested in is not able to be parked near and remain incognito, yet any other location to do such is miles away. On a quiet country road this might not be a problem, I could park at a nearby church, for example, get out my bike and ride to the location. However, some of the roads around here are NOT safe for cyclists (and as a veteran of two bicycle vs. car collusions, I'm very wary of where I ride now).
Case in point, two places I am scoping out are within 3000 feet of each other and have a very busy highway running between them. I highly doubt I could park anywhere near the buildings themselves without attracting attention because people are nosy motherfuckers here, and I'd probably die if I parked at whatever gas station is closest and rode my bike.
Would it be a terrible idea to park my car on the side of the road, stick a white T-shirt in the window, stand next to it on my cell phone pretending I am calling for help in the event there is traffic nearby when I stop, and then when no one's looking, slink away? It seems so simple that I feel like something must be wrong with it. Maybe there's some kind of bogus law about pretending your car is broken down when it's not really? (however, my van is in such bad shape that I could very easily fake a convincing breakdown!)
TL;DR...
can I leave my car with the "broken down" white rag in the window so I can get into a location easier or not?

That's a concern, yes. I could always wave them away with my phone in the other hand and say "Nope, my husband's on the way, thank you" but they'd probably try to forcibly carry me to their Chevy pickup and feed me sweet tea so I wouldn't wither like a delicate flower in the Southern heat. Dang kindhearted country folk.
The take a piss idea is rather brilliant, actually. That might work even better for me since I'm a chick and I can't just pee in front of the building, I have to go around to the back where there's privacy. ;) Now how to explain that I took a backpack full of camera stuff with me to pee...

Now that everyone knows about it these days, there are tons of kids and vandals (gangsters, taggers, cults etc.) that come into it and mess around. The police search the area pretty thoroughly, and even though im a "good looking" young female, I doubt they'd be receptive to the fact I broke down in my car and went to search an abandoned place for help.
Grant it, im TOTALLY new to this kind of thing. If I were you though, I would just make the hike and park my car on a side street of some sort. I suppose it all depends on how lenient your cops are though...

| | | | This would not work in a city setting, this would have to be strictly a rural type place. Do not park right in front of the buildings, but off by a couple streets or so and you should be fine.
If you are unlucky enough to have a cop actually stop by and do some hardcore investigating (plate running, or seeing if any calls were made to tow companies, etc, etc), then that is just unlucky, but so is climbing into a window and some old lady walking her dog seeing you and deciding to play the "hero" and call the cops. Even if anybody stopped you and you said your car was acting funny, how can they prove you wrong? Go start it up and be like, "duhh... it's shaking an awful lot... maybe I can get it home or to the nearest gas station"... it's not like they would take you to jail for thinking your car is sounding funny.
A lot of exploring does involve skills and playing it smart, but you can't control everything about the setting, so there definitely is some luck involved, too. Part of the skill is maximizing the outcome of this luck.
TL: DR- With a little luck, this should work in a rural setting.

Like this... this is the back of the house, and there's a fairly busy road in front of it... I just hid my car from the road

You only need a battery to start the car and you can get the at any 24hr walmart, the alternator is a good bet because you have to order them from an autoparts store or dealership and most of the close at 8pm.

If they ask if you need assistance just say you are being picked up and don't need them to come out and you should be safe, even have a nice little police immunity.

| | | | I wouldn't advertise a breakdown due to what people have already mentioned. People may stop to help, or worse, your car may be a vandal target if you indicated it's broken down and you are nowhere to be found.
Best thing you can do is just park on the road as normal and sneak away. People dont; pay much attention to a vehicle that's just parked, but put the hood up, or tie a white flag to it and you may draw attention. The white flag is rarely used.
Even cops don't pay much attention to parked cars in the boonies unless they've been there awhile, then you may get a warning tag to move it, but regardless if they stop, they will likely not go searching for you in an abandonment.
