Go look. Seriously, they'll leave lights on and usually there's nobody in there. Sometimes there is though. Knock, and ask to pee.

And if they are suspicious, pee on them and run.

Theoretically you could probably be charged with a B&E. I was caught once and told "Just go" - but I think that was because they didn't speak English and my spanish is bad (worse when I don't want to talk to cops). Just make super f*cking sure you don't pick up anything, especially tools, on the site.

in order to enter the site i have to walk past trailers. do security usually stay in those over night or not? and from what i saw it looks like they built around the crane? also any other info would be appreciated. i'm gonna scope it out more today in the daylight.

At the two construction sites with trailers I've done they did, but if you hang out and watch for an hour you'll know for sure.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned they could take you in and suggest attempted suicide.

Yep. Look up what the psychiatric evaluation can do with you. Here, it's something like:

Hold you without charges ('for evaluation') for 72 hours.
Constantly try to get you to voluntarily sign in.
At that time, make a decision to release you or involuntarily commit you.

Once committed, you don't have many rights. If involuntarily committed, it's worse. Most likely, you won't be found to be a "danger to self or others," but that's their criterion. Vadder, probably not the time to open up about your hobby history ;)

I was 'caught' on a crane two summers ago. The project manager's wife found my photos online and it all went downhill from there. They contacted me and my school and threatened to contact the state police if I didn't go in and meet with the construction company. I contacted a defense attorney to see what could happen. I was advised to go in and talk with them on the grounds no charges would be pressed.

It varies state to state but it could be considered criminal trespassing. Any incident relating to the crane or possible injuries following me climbing the crane would have been my 'fault' wether or not I was the cause of them. Their main concern was me tampering with the crane or causing problems to their safety devices. I got reamed out by the project manager, the head of the safety dept, and got a security guard fired for evading him and the cameras.

It was my stupidity that got me busted. Tagging the photos on flickr had them pop up in Google Images and posting photos with my face visible sealed the deal for self incrimination. Lesson learned and haven't had any trouble since then.
