And seriously, don't EVAR forget to bring a change of socks.

If I end up sleeping in the clothes I wore during the day, and I'm out somewhere, I'll bring a spare pare of socks even if I can't bring anything else. Otherwise my feet freeze in the slightest chill, and I find this highly annoying.

You know guys, pretty soon we'll have him bundled up with a full backpacking loadout, about 50lbs of stuff on his back, a signal mirror, strobe light, high viz reflective vest, and everyone's phone numbers.

Or I can get my lackies to do that

Bananas are good. Always bring a banana to a party.

I've never spent the night in an abandonment, but here's some common-sense stuff :

If you're in a building, make sure the air is clean. You don't want to breathe that all night. If possible, crack a window to get fresh air.
When you hit the hay, lay down in a corner of a room. This will provide the optimum amount of shelter from the elements, as your building may be drafty and drippy.
Clear your area of broken glass, insulation, etc.
Bring PLENTY of water.
If possible, close doors behind you. Possibly even push a desk, chair, etc, in front of it to make sure you're sealed up tight before you sleep, but don't create an exit hazard - make sure you still have a quick exit plan in case you need one.
