| | | Spending the night. < on 4/14/2011 12:45 AM >
| | | I've been looking at some locations and one is quite far away but is huge and definitely needs to be explored, only problem is it's kind of far from our HQ (aka my moms house) If we did go we would probably camp out there. Got any advice? Should we sleep in shifts?

| | | Just make sure you pick a safe spot to sleep in. You dont want people sneaking up at you while you sleep!

I lol'd at this.
Location location location! Hard to say that any random location is good to sleep at. If there's any reason you'd be wearing filter masks or half-respirators at the site, you'd wanna consider that for sleeping areas, like we do in the mines. Maintain good light discipline. Don't get caught. If you're spending enough time there that you're sleeping, don't forget dumb stuff like ...water, tp, sex toys, food, etc. It's always a pain when you decide to sleep somewhere then you realize you forgot to pack something stupid simple, then you have an upset stomach and end up using a sock to wipe your ass, and end up walking around sans one sock. On that note, make sure to get by with as little as possible, and check the weather ahead of time so you know what you'll be dealing with. **EDIT** oh and since you're 15, you might wanna arrange some kinda backup plan so your mom knows where you're gonna be. Or not. [last edit 4/14/2011 1:00 AM by Therrin - edited 1 times]
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

Thank you, really great advice, and for the last thing I already have a plan for that.

| | | Bring something for bedding and a warm sleeping bag. I don't care if you're in California, concrete, steel, wood, raw earth sucks the heat right out of you. A foam mat is enough, but hammock is probably the best option. Keep flashlights to a minimum if there are windows and use red-light filters on your lights if possible. Red light is less visible to the human eye. No space heaters or anything that could start a fire. Inb4teh "omgzscurry" from noobs: People do this all the time, it's no biggie, but can if you are ill prepared will be an extremely uncomfortable night.

Absolutely. Bring warmer gear than you think you'll need. I love my camping hammock, but if for UE camping I'd probably sleep on the ground. I wouldn't worry about sleeping in shifts, just try to set up camp somewhere not obvious. ALSO, thecakeizalie, I just looked at your website. Lose the crowbars. They're the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony.

Yeah after our run in with the cops (And plus us having to wait 5 extra fucking hours for fed-ex to deliver) we decided to forget the crowbar. EDIT: We left the crowbar in the building we were in and all said we found it, after we left Brian asked "Are we going to get the crowbar back?" then in unison we all said "Fuck that" [last edit 4/14/2011 1:52 AM by Triodug - edited 1 times]

We never used it, only brought it just in case, also because Brian doesn't have any morals (He was the one who wanted it) When we got there and realized we didn't need it Brian just played with it and acted like Gordan Freeman.

He's 15, but is probably more mature than anyone in the group, but me and him both love video game jokes and half life. It's my friend Nick who act's like a 10 year old...I wonder why I even bring him.

Hammocks are awesome, but you still need the mat inside it for insulation

| | | When I was your age I routinely spend the night in storm drains and abandoned places about town to escape oppressive parents... Learned a lot. Still love camping out in abandoned places. A few weeks ago I needed a getaway and went and camped out on the top of an abandoned fire watch tower directly overlooking a big local lake... Waking up in the tower to a slight breeze and the twitter of birds and having a cup of coffee to the sun rising over the lake was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.
- Look for fresh trash, beer bottles, spray paint cans, food garbage, clothes or whatnot, no dust or cobwebs on them means someone else who sees a bunch of 12 year olds as an all you can rape buffet frequents the place.
- Choose somewhere secluded, but not hard to get to. If someone else does come in the night, there's a good chance they'll stay out of the secluded areas, you probably will never know they're there and vice versa. But if they do find you, the last thing you want to do is run a gauntlet to escape.
- Don't camp ANYWHERE that's a sensitive location, like somewhere that is still active in any fashion, somewhere that is merely closed and not abandoned, etc.
- Don't ever, ever light a campfire in ANY abandonment. Bring a propane grill if you absolutely have to cook, otherwise, pack sandwiches and
beer soda to munch on.
- Don't be dumb and bring stuff you're not supposed to have as a minor, like tobacco, weed, weapons, spray paint, etc.
- Bring a set of light clothes, and a set of heavy clothes. IE, go in wearing shorts and a t shirt but bring jammie pants and a hoodie, just in case. Some of these abandonments get freaking cold for like, no reason known to physics.
- Don't bring ANYTHING of value when you go camping- ANYTHING. Cheap ass point and shoot if you need a camera, crappy grill, old clothes and sleeping bag. If you need to run, RUN. Leave EVERYTHING, it's not worth your life or a ticket. If you're ballsy come back later and grab it, hobo piss washes out.
- +1 on the hammock idea. They're cheap, very, very portable, and often much more comfortable. If nothing else, it's much, much better to find out that snakes and rats come out en masse after dark and have a special love for warm, cozy sleeping bags. (yes I found this out the hard way.)
- Have transport ready in case you need to bail. Since you can't drive, ride bikes. Nothing worse than jumping into the frying pan and out of the fire by running like hellions out of the abandoned warehouse, leaving everything, and realizing you're alone with 2-3 other minors in the industrial wrong side of town without shirts or shoes and on foot. Also, found that out the hard way.
- HAVE FUN!!! If you're 14 and have the balls to spend the night in an abandoned place, you're miles ahead of your peers in the whole growing hair on your balls thing, kudos. Enjoy it, but don't get cocky, it's dangerous for everyone. ENJOY!

Ditto...this pretty much applies to any kind of camping. You can camp in July in VA and still need thermal pajamas and four heavy blankets on your sleeping pad.

| | | And seriously, don't EVAR forget to bring a change of socks. If I end up sleeping in the clothes I wore during the day, and I'm out somewhere, I'll bring a spare pare of socks even if I can't bring anything else. Otherwise my feet freeze in the slightest chill, and I find this highly annoying.
You know guys, pretty soon we'll have him bundled up with a full backpacking loadout, about 50lbs of stuff on his back, a signal mirror, strobe light, high viz reflective vest, and everyone's phone numbers.
