| | What clothing/gear do you use when exploring? < on 4/9/2011 3:15 PM >
| | | I didn't find a thread for this, so I made one. Do you have particular clothing for exloring only, or do you use the first thing your hand reaches to when digging your wardrobe? I mostly use army surplus stuff. I got some cheap jackets, boots and pants at a local Finnish Defence Forces surplus store at Oulu this tuesday which I aim to use in the future. I also have some Bundeswehr combat uniforms, and I use BW Battle vests or chest rigs for carrying those light sticks which you twist and they make light, my camera and various items ranging from first-aid kits to food. So pretty much, when I go exploring, I look like Im going to war

| | | I just wear casual street clothes that I won't cry over if they get ruined. Jeans, T-shirt, sneakers. I want to blend in and look like I'm just some student with a camera rather than a member of Special Ops. Sometimes when I want to feel like a secret agent I wear my black leather trenchcoat.

Sounds like you look suspicious before you even leave the house.
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

| | | Well you really don't wanna look like someone who might be doing something wrong. More like a student who is just interested in abandoned places and wants to take pictures for a portfolio or some assignment. You don't want any extra attention.

| | | IMHO the first rule of being a good ninja, is not to dress like a ninja. Just wear civilian clothes, lots of grey, brown, green, dark blue, avoid black because it will make your silhouette stand out in the dark. If you look like you are going to war, thats what people are going to assume when they see you. So try to look as innocent as possible.
Too lucky for my own good... |

| | | I see nothing wrong wearing army stuff around where I explore because almost all of the places I have been at are at least a kilometer away from a public road or an area that is inhabited

Secret agent trenchcoats FTW! Yeah, although my operations are clearly very special, I wear jeans, tank tops, jackets in dark colors, boots or sneakers on my feet.

| | | Depends on the location. For little stuff, like houses, small businesses or such, I'll just bring a small satchel with a camera, some water, first aide kit and smokes. Anything more is just dead weight and makes you more conspicuous. For big places, always, always ALWAYS bring a big bag, get into the building and out of site THEN change into your exploring gear. For big industrial sites with lots of hazards, I'll go in wearing sneakers, basketball shorts, tshirt and backpack, wander around wearing a hoodie w/ a fall harness over it, safety tether coiled on my belt, thick cargo jeans, combat boots, respirator on the face and headlamp on, and still in the pack will be food, water, cameras, film, tripod, spare respirator filter (just in case we run into something REAL foul); rope, grappling hook and a BIG first aid kit with provisions for making splints, ace bandages, etc. For drains, thin, flexible sneakers, shorts, and tank top/shirtless. Bring the smallest pack you can find, it will get in the way, don't bring a camera, it will get soaked. Buy a headlamp, use that for light, and bring just some water, a snack and a small first aid kit. Be sure to put your phone, wallet, and any electronics in a ziplock bag to keep them dry!

True fact, original ninjas didn't have a costume or anything. They'd just dress in rags or whatever to fit in. It wasn't until they started getting portrayed in Japanese theatre that they were shown wearing all black, and in that case it was only for theatrical stage considerations.

| | | In my opinion suspicious is behavior not appearance. It depends on the weather and where I'm going. Today I had to hike through muddy clay and low lying brush, I wore jeans, a pair of old combat boots, and a hoodie. The other day I was going to a site just off the road so I wore running shoes, shorts and a T-Shirt. I bring my Mechanix gloves with me so I can touch things with impunity. Go with clothes you don't care about getting dirty and reliable shoes that are up for the terrain.

| | | I wear Carhart's and think they are the best. They're good, strong pants that are warm and breathable and come in muted colors such as black, dark green and blue. I also use dark colored tee shirts and coats and carry a bag with the essentials such as utility gloves, a particle filter and whatnot. Also some kind of solid foot wear, hiking or army boots work great. As far as "suspicious is behavior not appearance" I dont agree with that. If you look up to no good, thats what people will think. Go into all place using caution but kinda act like your supposed to be there, if you're always looking over your shoulder and staring at people, someone is going to know whats up. Also not that I have the best camera but exactly like Spacemanspiff said - acting like a student or photographer will help you 9 times out of 10. And play nice if your caught. BTW just read this note that this guy got in this thread. (I dont think looking suspicious works) http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=90308

Your right but when exploring you need both, its not one or the other.
