Morgan's Point, former US Naval Annex Bermuda - Mega post!

So I finally did something which might vaguely be described as "UE". I was alerted to an Audubon Society bird watching walk at the old US Naval Annex and jumped at the opportunity to possibly see at least a little bit of the base. However I arrived too late to join the group and was therefore free to wander about by myself and explore, which was my intent anyway *grin*.

The base itself is a peninsula formed by joining several islands together with landfill. It was created during World War II as a base for float planes, and later naval vessels after the full airport opened at the other end of the island.

It seems that many buildings have disappeared over the years; I have found photos online of areas that appear to be full-on, quite attractive towns. But there are still a number of intriguing structures remaining.

Fortunately this area will remain undeveloped due to the extensive ground pollution which would cost too much to clean up to make any development financially feasible.

The peninsula is a

This used to be wide open road, verged with neatly cut grass and concrete curbs. But it's quite attractive in this state as well.

Storm drain cover with the date of original development. *This* would be interesting to explore!

Inaccessible Pier by elbowgeek, on Flickr

I really wanted to get down to this dock to take in the view, but bizarrely there was no obvious path through the dense trees; not even a hint that there was ever a path to it.

Main Street Heading East by elbowgeek, on Flickr

I call this section "Main Street" due to the fact that it's the only remaining bit that resembles an organized town of any sort.

These buildings were quite interesting in that they were relatively ornately detailed for military installations. This would certainly date them to war time. This building was identified as the fleet laundry facility, but the rather grand entrance put me in mind of an entertainment establishment of some sort, such as a night club.

Building Opposite Laundry by elbowgeek, on Flickr

The building opposite the rather imposing Fleet Laundry. Function is unknown.

Laundry 2 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

A closer look at the laundry entrance. My ID of this building's function comes from a rather crude stencil on one of the side windows.

Another view of the Laundry, just to give a sense of size of the place.

Abandoned Dock - Wendy 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

Miss Wendy - Teddy Tucker's old dive boat! This thing's seen a lot of adventure in it's time, and it's very sad to see it in such a state.

This dock was found just off the Main Street area, and seemed to be a dumping ground for boats damaged by past storms.

Abandoned Dock - Toxic Wrench by elbowgeek, on Flickr

This rather dodgy looking barrel was just sitting on the dock for no good reason; I was to find out later that it was not an unusual sight at Morgan's Point.

Abandoned Dock - Champagne Lady 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

Another otherwise quite nice looking vessel attached to the dock. I'll have to axe some friends at the Dinghy Club who owns this...

Posh House 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

This may have been the base commander's residence. I was dying to look inside, but was one of the few truly inaccessible buildings.

Eatery 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

This may not have been a Michelin-recognized restaurant, but I haven't checked. Gotta love the mind-numbingly generic name of the establishment *grin*.

Admin Block 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

I believe these were barracks.

Morgans Point Pano by elbowgeek, on Flickr

Rather shrunken panorama of the view from Morgan's Point. I'll reupload in larger format later.

Bermadoo 1 by elbowgeek, on Flickr

The Bermadoo!! I can only imagine the hot disco nights spent here. Cringe...

That's all for now, this post is getting out of hand. More to come though, including a monster panorama of the open area at the tip of the peninusula.

I do hope to get back there with a companion so I can actually enter a few of the more interesting buildings. I didn't fancy my chances alone being the big old wimp that I am heh.

Weeeell my mate has made some inquiries about that; not sure what the outcome will be, but we'll see.

It was the work boat of Teddy Tucker, the well known treasure hunter. It's seen a fair bit of gold on it's decks I'd wager.

Cheers

I'll hopefully get the pano up tonight. Yes, there were a few sailboats around that whole area, many very sadly neglected.

Great finds!

Was this the same trip that Agent Alice went on with you guys? I know she was talking about exploring a recruiting station and an old ship.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Yes must get inside, place looks awesome. Would make a great COD level.

Hmmm, not sure what you're talking about, but if there's any Bermuda explorers out there who want to join me they can PM me and I'll be very happy to go.

Cheers

Haha, actually it would probably be an extremely boring COD level; the Bermuda military installations were known as being incredibly easy and uneventful tours. The most dangerous thing you'll encounter here are the mopeds *grin*.

Hi, this intrigues me greatly. Do you have any photos of the base you wouldn't mind sharing with me? I'm trying to build an image of what it was like in it's heyday and try to match that with the photos I took.

You can PM me if you prefer. Thanks!

It is quite beautiful in it's own way now that it's overgrown as it is. From the very few photos I've seen of it during active duty it would have been wildly different.

Just too bad about the toxic stuff...
