| | | I'm not recommending either choice, but since Av seems eager to know what the majority wants, this seems like a good way to find out. I've kept it down to two choices, so as not to split up the vote six ways. The choice of leaving things as they are now is pretty self-explanatory. Some of the various options for restricting access include being less search engine friendly, making the LDB less open to non-registered users, or having newly registered users wait before accessing the database. | | | I really like the option of having new members wait a certain period of time before having access to the LDB - perhaps a month? Moreover, removing the "physical information" and "security measures" sections just makes sense to me. Real explorers will find the place on their own without an address, and they will gauge the security with their own eyes and make their own decisions.

| | | Well, the original suggestion I made that started the whole "waiting period" thing was to also have it be on condition of having participated in the forums. You could set a post limit, but then people will write one-word posts until they get their count up far enough to gain access... of course, mods would delete these posts so they wouldn't count. But this makes more work for the mods. I don't have a good solution... I remember when this issue came up before, people were saying you would need to have added a location to the DB yourself to gain access, but then you get people submitting stuff like Abandoned Ames #54325, and you shut out folks who may be good contributors to the community but choose not to post locations in the LDB. I've pulled a Michael Moore here, proposed problems without suggesting solutions... but truthfully I don't have any good solutions to the root problem, which is: - The appearance to LEAs that we are aiding criminals - The attracting of "poor quality" participants who contribute nothing of value to the forum I don't know how you define "poor quality", because I guess someone could define me as poor quality (I usually participate in the off-topic threads), but in general I think it's the recent invasion of folks who come on here, ask for info on a place in their very first post, and then start insulting everyone who kindly suggests they do their own research first. Edit: I do have one suggestion, and I know it'll be unpopular: allow location creators to delete entries. If I decide one of my entries is gaining the location unneeded or "bad" attention, it'd probably be a good idea to be able to remove it. Or set up protocols for users to ask mods to remove the locations. [last edit 4/21/2004 7:33 PM by Servo - edited 1 times]

I would really like to see that. I think that location or gallery creators should have the power to remove their entries. They put them there, so why should they not have the ability to delete them? Especially if, as you said, they are provoking unwanted attention, or even if the person does not care to have them available to all and sundry any longer.

| | | Av, you've stated numerous times that if this site were removed from the search engines, the community would stagnate and we would lose the few gems that come down the sluice with the rest of the worthless earth. The problem is that we can't sieve out these gems and discard the dross, we have to keep it all. As others noted, there has been a plethora or dumbasses registering and looking for popular "urban tourism" sites in their city. Now, I understand this will always be the case, but something needs to be done. If UER is taken from the search engines, it will still be linked by the mirror sites, all of which generate steady traffic as it is, and a ton of other UE related websites and rings. I think these links alone would provide enough inflow to keep the community from stagnating, but it would in all probability increase the ratio of gems to trash.

DITTO! The amount of trash we get surely does nothing but out weigh the positive gems that we do get. It's pretty clear in the content on this site. [last edit 4/21/2004 9:03 PM by Frost - edited 1 times]
Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? Its a natural plant that grows in the dirt. You know what's not natural, 80 year old dudes with hardons. Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt. |

| | | There is the Webring. Almost like a search engine, There are sites like mine that have a link to UER on it. Noah is right, all the mirror sites can keep up the hits. I get 15 hits a day on my site, around 100 hits a week.
