Prypiat/Chernobyl - part 2

Chernobyl/Prypiat - Oct 2010 - continued

Train yard - scrappers somehow managed to knock over several train cars to steal the base frames/wheels/brakes of the cars, these things are heavy, I'm impressed they managed to do this in the middle of a field with limited tools.

For some reason the moss in the exclusion zone retains a lot more radiation then almost anything else. The moss in this tank tread registered as 57 microSieverts, normal background radiation is .1 to .2 so this was a little high.

Next we went to a large lake that was used to hold water for the nuclear reactors. They had 4 HUGE cranes that were being used to expand the lake, one of them had fallen into the water and the others were sitting on the edge of the lake waiting to fall in. We climbed up to the top of them but I was too chicken to take any photos from up there since I have a little fear of heights when on sketchy things where I could fall to my death.

Typical sight in the zone, contamination warning signs with the reactor in the background

They let you get about 100m away from the damaged reactor #4 and the sarcophagus covering it up. Radiation here was about 17 mSv, so not bad but you don't want to work there for months on end, which is why they have workers work a shift of 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off.

Reactors 5/6

When the incident happened they were building 2 more reactors that were contained in one large building. Due to the incident these reactors were never finished and have been slowly rusting away. The official response to them is that they are being dismantled and demolished but in reality they are being scrapped by anyone who slips the guards a few hryvnia. (Ukrainian currency) Due to all of the scrapping they traditionally don't allow people to see reactors 5 and 6 but our guide was able to talk to the right people and we were allowed inside.

Inside it was a mostly pitch black rusty pit of death. Random sharp pieces of steel stuck out from poured concrete and large big endless pits of doom were all around you. To get around these pits you used random pieces of I beams that were laying over the place in a haphazard pathway of wobbly bridges. It was fun for the whole family!

I believe this room was to be the control room for the plant

The scrapyard out back waiting to be reduced to smaller pieces and sold off

What I think what was to be one of the main hallways inside the plant

The sketchy ladder of death - someone made this out of scrap rebar and it was so wobbly and unstable. In fact someone used an actual ladder to help support the sketchy ladder and let you get up onto this one section of the roof.

This set has the best photos I've seen of the place. No tiresome apartment blocks or that damn ferris wheel.

Awesome photos. It must have been amazing to go there, let alone spend time inside the structure.

Finally, a thread worthy of:
