| | | Hey, just a question about the new enable/disable Read option -- I only use this on some forums (for instance, I generally don't read the Canadian and world forums). Would it help server load to give the user finer granularity over this feature? I don't know where most of the time expense is for this feature, so if this wouldn't help, just say so.

| | | basically, i am trying to prevent the forum from storing read states from people who don't care for them at all, or people who haven't been here in a while.

| | | I also had this thought. I know this feature is already somewhat limited in the location database, but would it be feasable to allow users to turn it off for specific forums as well? Maybe someone doesn't care about the canadian regional boards and the world board. If they could turn off this feature for these boards, perhaps more server resources could be spared than when users are only allowed all or nothing settings.

| | | no, having half as many read states only takes marginal amounts less than all of them. it's the 90% of users who don't even care about the read states that i am trying to affect with this.

| | | Hmm I like your idea, but I agree with servo have it so you can disable parts of the forum you don't use. I don't need it for world or usa or forum issues or website updates or tutorials but I would like to use it for the others.. I don't know I've turned it off to save you some space, but if it could be coded in I'd definately be happy. Your the owner Av so I'll go with anything you do..

| | | look guys, i've already said it twice. don't turn it off to "save space" -- if you want to use it, use it. the setting is there so that the people who don't even visit this site anymore don't waste server resources.

| | | I think maybe what they are talking about is how handy it would be to "Ignore Thread" in kind of the same way you can "Ignore location" in the UEDB - regardless of system resources there are some threads I'll never look at - it would be handy to "ignore" them so when I pull up a list of threads they are all grey. I dunno, maybe it's a neatness thing - It might make it easier for me to find the threads I'm interested in and new threads if the "ignored" threads were all greyed out. Anyway, I don't really care. I was just playing with ignore location and thought it might work well in the forums. edit-typo [last edit 4/13/2004 9:55 PM by Chainsaw - edited 1 times]

| | | I don't need ignore forums, I was just seeing if what I suggested would help save space. If not, then don't mess with it.
