^^^^ That is a good point. Trespassing at night carries heftier penalties. For example, in Virginia, breaking and entering (which is really just entering) at night is automatically B&E with intent to burglarize. Not something you want. That being said, I always go at night. It's just what I've always done. I do drains in the day though.

That's hilarious, you can get busted more for trespassing at night in Canada!? In the UK it's a slap on the wrist day or night, unless you're carrying tools/graf/stolen items etc.

Personally I prefer daytime where i can, but generally a couple of hours before dawn is best, that way you can get in easier undetected, grab a few cool long exposures, and have an idea of the site. Then when it's lighter get easier photos and not prang your head on some pipe/trip into a bottomless pit you wouldn't have seen in the dark.

What else do you have to do Friday night than sleep on premises, then wake up early and do things? Summer's nice for camping in. Be aware of local hobo populations.

So if you're sleeping in a location, do you have others stay up in shifts to make sure you're not accosted while you sleep? I'd be terrified I'd get knifed by a hobo. That's assuming I could sleep at all.

I prefer exploring during the day. I like being able to see a whole place at once, rather than just what my flashlight illuminates.

I prefer to explore at night. Most of the places I visit either have security patrols, nearby nosey neighbors, police presence, etc. and all of the above are much easier to evade at night. It makes buildering and rope work a bit more challenging and yes, you can only see what your torch (or torch and headlamp) illuminate, but the benefits outweigh the cons for me.

TL;DR?
Day time: higher risk for capture, mediocre atmosphere.
Night time: higher risk of screwing up while doing something technical and dangerous, awesomesphere!

No. We slept on a roof in Detroit and didn't have a "watch." Most hobos won't stab you or attack you. Hobos aren't typically violent bastards who just want your money. They're people, just like us. Chances are if they wander into you while you're sleeping, they're looking for a spot to sleep too.

Of course, don't have valuables laying about and don't dress like you're a rich son of a bitch. It helps if you too look a little like a hobo when in territory frequented by hobos. =)

I just like daytime exploring cause its less creepy and its usually easier to see your surroundings, also, there tend to be less homeless and vagrants waiting to surprise you during the day.

Intellectually I'm with you, but I get scared when I'm camping that I'll be accosted by moonshine-addled Appalachian Americans, so...

Do what they do, hide where you won't be found. Or you can scatter broken lightbulbs around you.

Yea, like many have said, location is the main factor.
Some places you are just not afforded the convenience of a daytime visit.
I do most of mine at night, but a few less conspicuous locations have granted me the kindness of sun light and being able to see where the f@$k I am going was a great treat for sure
Got "ballsy" one time and went into a pretty public location in the daytime, but only took a few quick pics once common sense kicked in. I booted ass out of there without getting caught.
The very next time up there in the middle of the night, I actually got caught.
The irony. hahaha
Just use your head, day or night would be the gist of the story

I usually do my explorations during the day, enter around 9-10:00am and usually leave between 3 and 5pm. Gives the local residents time to get up and out and gives me time to get out before they come "home."

From a photographers perspective day is absolutely the best. Though, these days I also sometimes visit places at night.(take a good flashlight though) It is better for these tough places in crowded area's and some lightpainted pictures are pretty nice for the variety sometimes.

I've only gone during the day. Two reasons:
1) I go by myself so this makes it easier to see what's around. I don't need to depend so much on an extra pair of eyes catching things that I miss.

2) It easier for me to take pictures.

If I want to go to an area and get some 'twilight' pictures I always go at dawn rather than dusk. I don't want to be having to make my way out in the dark. I made that mistake when trying to get some city shots from Treasure Island and had to get out in the dark. My flashlight was great but it killed my nightvision.

Gravity, it's not just a good idea, it's the law.

Dude, missions are NOT lame.

As for myself, I generally end up going right around sundown, which is cool because it gives me time to scout, find a POE, and figure out any other threats that may be around, and then by the time I do that, it is dark enough that I can get in and be quiet about it and nobody is aware of it.

I completely agree - finding the POE is difficult at night unless you already know where to look (ie have a guide with you), but exploring during the day isn't as thrilling as night imho.

Haha, I am an Appalachian American! Occasionally moonshine-addled.

I really prefer daytime over night. I like 'Monday-Friday'/'9am-5pm' best for most places. I figure while most are at work there is less chances of pesky people.

The other night, I was in Dawson Forest with Chris-Kicker, MonkeyPunchBaby, and his new wife when we discovered a campsite not far from us. We were on our way back to the car and they started whistling at us and coming over! Well, just because I am redneck, it doesn't give me a special pass to avoid fighting with other rednecks haha. Alot of us rednecks like to fight when we get good and drunk. Fortunately their slow, alcohol-induced pace allowed us to get to our cars before they caught up to us.

I see alot less at night, don't know what your up against at night, and I can enjoy alot less scenery at night. Daytime RULES!
