Walla Walla and College Place officers are dicks enough as it is in the day.
Might as well lessen any chances of getting caught and do everything at night.

Daytime. While there could be an increased risk of you getting seen by security or somebody else, you're able to take clearer pictures and explore more..

If there is any risk of being caught I always go at night. Most of my exploring takes place is places that are at least near a forest so I feel comfortable that I can disappear if anyone undesirable shows up, but disappearing in the day is harder. I think the last time I did any exploring in the day I accidentally stumbled upon someones still back in an area of the forest where I would have preferred to not have found that. So now I always go at night, 2-3 in the morning is my favorite time of night.

We usually go during the day so nobody sees our flashlights through windows, we can take better pictures and also we noticed we dont run into quite as many people in the buildings during the day because they are out doing whatever it is that they do instead of sleeping. There are a few places we prefer to go at night but they are usually places out in the country or that have no windows. Guards are usually pretty easy to bypass but maybe its because we usually only sneak into inactive/abandoned things where the guards are bored and not expecting anybody to be there so are not really paying attention.

I go during the day for several reasons.

Easier to recon before entering

Easier to play off if you get caught. Getting caught at night by security/police is much worse then during the day.

Once you make it inside, it's easier to explore without having your lights seen from the outside.

While it may be easier to sneak in at night, it's also easier for security to sneak in as well without being seen by you.

Greater chance of running into homeless people or drug deals at night.

For me, it is governed by factors surrounding the location. Ive done it all... Day/Night/Predawn/UrbanCamping etc.

Predawn is good for some of the secured locations, especially if there is a lot of gear involved. Sunrises make for incredible photo opportunities as well!

Night is a thrill that is hard to beat. One factory location was supposed to be a perimeter scout and turned into a full on explore when we found an easy way in... The problem was, my buddy and I retardedly left all the gear in the car, including the flashlights as we figured we didnt need them shining on the extremities of the building at night in a residential neighborhood. We explored the whole place that night via a single keychain light (think UER keychain light)... Then came back early the next day for all the photos. It was intense.

Its all good. Just use your best judgment based on the location you are exploring. Experience doesnt hurt either.

Also, I have an 'open door' policy. If you see an open door... ALWAYS GO IN! No matter (almost) what time or place. For some reason it has never let me down and has allowed some spectacular and otherwise impossible explores.

Oh... the stories that come to mind...

Day time for me!
Although ladies look better in night...my God.......DAY LIGHT!
Not to mention my photographs look way better in pre-dawn/dawn/full-on double rainbow light!

I get very scared exploring at night. Probably because I've had unpleasant interactions that have scared me to light!
If I was in a group, I could go at night, but alone or one other - hell no. I'll be locked in the car, in the fetal position with hot cocoa trying to call a friend!

For me it depends on the location if its a place thats big and im gonna wanna spend some time in it. I go in in the dark like 15 minutes before it starts getting light out. I spend a couple of hours looking around and getting pics then bug out. To be honest most of the places i like are on the outskirts of towns or cities and a lot of the time they are locked on the ground levels so ill go in through an upper floor window and that is the kinda thing you want darkness for, and a head lamp with a red light. Thats what i do.

I tend to do both and like somebody already said, pick your poison =)

somebody also mentioned it depends on where you are. Some places can only be gotten in at night. Any where you have to do some climbing to other floors to even get in, you may want to do at night.

day is definitely better for pics for numerous reasons but cameras DO have flashes, and little LED headlamps with a red bulb can be very useful too. If you are not near any windows then you do not need to be as concerned about flashes and/or flashlights for pictures.

I find buildings have different feelings between day and night. I honestly prefer them at night, especially rooftops, but they are amazing in the day too. Best thing if you can, stay a few nights in them =)

I think the most important thing is do not be seen actually going in, OR coming out. Being near the building is not too damning unless a cop/security physically sees you entering or exiting.

On those grounds, it is also super good to know your rights and how to deal with police and not escalate things or bury yourself.

Yeah, really pick you think is best.

I'm a sunday morning / afternoon kind of chap. Quiet, peaceful, and fewer LEO's on the street. Most of the time we can enter a place with no one around to see, the only exception being a passing car that just doesn't care. Just dress the part though. Dont look all tactical is you're exploring somewhere populated. If someone sees you entering a building in full UE SWAT gear chances are good word will get out.

Nigh does make things easier, sometimes. But sure makes it a bugger to take good photos indoors.

Depends on location and how well I (or those I go with) know it. Will generally scout out during early evening > dusk, and go in at night. Better atmosphere, seeing as though I don't just go for the photography. If the place has real photographic potential, may go back during better lighting.

Night has its positives and negatives, much like day does. At night you can be a lot more hidden whilst moving around, entering and exiting, etc. However, at the same time you can draw more attention in using lighting (even though I do have a red-lensed headlamp), and flash. The one time my accomplice and I have been caught in a compound, we deduced we were a bit "trigger happy" with our lamps and flash. Unexpectedly running into people (ie: security) at night can be a terrifying experience! Not to mention there is a higher chance of hurting yourself with reduced visibility, I think that's a key point... you are nowhere near as aware of your surroundings at night.

I'm more of a daytime person. I like the ability to take pictures of interiors and just generally being able to see what you're exploring without a flashlight. Even though it's easier to be seen during the day, if I had to choose, being caught during the day is much more preferable, and easier to explain. But like everyone has been saying, there are sites that kind of require the cloak of darkness.

I always go nighttime in drains, daytime for abandoned sites...I feel much more comfortable popping a manhole in the pitch black than in the middle of the day. I have run into people on my way out of drains before @ 3 AM, but never been harassed....They just look at me like I'm a underground sewer hobo, and once a lady asked me if I needed help, I said I was fine but who knows what she was thinking!

To fail in what you've yet to achieve is more the spirit of exploration than to make no attempt at all.

As I am still new, I have only been out at night with the team. I think nighttime just adds to it, yes I am a photographer (of sorts) and understand the pros of daytime but it just seems that if exploring in daytime just wouldn't feel right, everything is out in the open and lit up doesn't leave much to actually "explore." Part of the fun of night is tripping over something that turns out to be really cool, and discovering different corners of a new room with a flashlight gives more excitement to it instead of all at once. Plus there is the night pro of more controlled lighting i.e. flashlights to get exactly what you want, and playing with lightpainting and other color lights is always a cool effect I think.

we found grinders, it caused a photogasm within myself...

^^^^ That is a good point. Trespassing at night carries heftier penalties. For example, in Virginia, breaking and entering (which is really just entering) at night is automatically B&E with intent to burglarize. Not something you want. That being said, I always go at night. It's just what I've always done. I do drains in the day though.

YARGH!!! I'm in VA too and was thinking of scouting a POE at a place here in town at night because it is on such a busy street and I would like to be able to poke around without being seen so I can find an easy place to get into quickly later. But now I am reconsidering! Especially considering the Nosy McNosersons around here. If you don't have to break in is it still B&E? (i.e. if I just open a door or go in through a window?)

depends,
i usually hit each location at least once at night, to scope it out and for the "creep factor" and once in the daytime for photo op.

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

It really depends on where it is , usually I like to lurk around in the day a bit to see what kind of , who and ,when, other people are around, see if any security camera's or any of that sort of stuff is present.
Night is more exciting, you never know if you'll run across a blood thirsty fiend, cops, dogs or a psycho drugo.

Ive been caught inside a fence of an abandoned factory once I tried to look worried and said I was looking for my dog.
