The UER Shape

A few weeks ago, I saw an article in Make Magazine about a 3-axis shadow casting block that said "MIT". I thought it was neat and was immediately inspired to make one that said "UER". Those three letters are quite a bit more complicated, but I pulled out Google Sketchup, which is free, and tried my hand. This is the result:

I thought it was pretty neat, but I really wanted to hold it in my hand. I went online to Shapeways.com and uploaded my design, and ordered the shape in a variety of sizes and materials.

One of the pieces I ordered was gold-plated stainless steel, and it arrived after 2-3 weeks. So of course, I had to set up a scene like the original MIT photo. Voila!

A close-up of the piece:

The photo workshop:

Getting the damn thing to stay upright was rather difficult. But here is the complete series of shapes I ordered:

It's really neat to design something on the computer and then hold it in your hand! Anyway if you want your own UER shape, you can order it from Shapeways

The letters look like they are fucking each other nasty style.

Which is good!

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

That's pretty bad-ass. We have a few machines that can do parts like that at work, in metal or plastic. Neat.

Yeah, the cover of that book was the inspiration for the MIT guy.

Of course, the book cover is an illustration and not an actual illumination of those shapes... they wouldn't quite work out so cleanly

What did some of those things cost? (if you don't mind)

Way too much. The big plastic blue one was $60, the metal gold-plated one was $20, and all the other ones were $4 or $5.

In total the order cost me $100. But, due to Shapeways shipping B.S., I was charged over $75 in duty charges. I'm currently trying to get them to refund some of that.

Aside from the duty, that's not too bad for a fun little project.

Can you export to VRML format? If so, I can probably have them done at work. Much cheaper. Of course, 2D files would work too, but it would have to be reconstructed in 3D for use here at work.

Maybe we can get a clear one and light that shit up!

shipping from US to Canada can do that... It needs to be marked properly as to not get charged more than the item is actually worth.

I'm been trying to visualize how to combine an S, M and N together (me, wife and dog). The M + N are easy... but I can't figure out how to work in an S. Maybe it can't be done? hrm.

i don't think it can because both the m and n are not solid letters at the top and bottom. i think for it to work you need at least two of the letters to be solid at top and bottom.

Sorry, what was that you were saying about forever alone?
