|  | | | I'm just curious, does anyone carry a police scanner with them when they explore? I used to have a handheld digital scanner and brought it with me on my first exploration, I had it tuned to the city PD while using earbuds.
I can see both pros and cons, a plus to having one would be that if you heard the dispatcher say something along the lines of "report of suspicious activity at such and such location", you may have time to get the hell out of there depending on how close the nearest car is, and how deep you are inside. Or if you are unfortunate enough to be stuck inside, you could hear what they are planning on doing and if/when they leave. Although I can imagine if you do get caught and they find you have a scanner, I'm sure it would be harder to make up an excuse as to why you were inside. I also believe they may be illegal in some states, but not sure.
Any thoughts?

there are tons of sites that offer more specific, state by state legal information, google "scanner laws" or "scanner used in the commission of a crime"
overall, probably a bad idea

Good info, which is why I stopped using it after the first exploration, wasn't worth the risk... That and I sold it, haha.

You have to enjoy that eerie silence and learn to get used to the noises of the building itself. There's really no need for it. If your not there to steal anything..and your not smashing out windows and what not..I suggest just taking it all in..forget police and what not..
On another note however..I guess I would consider using one if I was doing recon..Checking a place out before I spend a day there. I posted a while back about going into semi-active or recently abandoned sites..the suggestions here were to find a POE check it out..and fall back and watch the site to see if anyone shows up to your presence. I guess a scanner could be a useful tool for that. But ..a bit over the top anyway. And remember what the above posts say.. Usually carrying a scanner does UP the overall penalty for whatever your doing. The use of a scanner in that manner is illegal..and makes you look that much more suspicious.

Some motorola's and Maxon and other radios you can get dual-band.
So you can use one band for transmitting and you can actually program the other band to a scanner frequency to listen to the cops.
That way if you get caught unless they go and check the programming on it or send it to the lab or something they only know that you use it as a walkie talkie, not that you're dual-banding it to scan their channels.
Niffty stuff, look into it if you're interested.

They scan and call you and tell you to get the fuck outta there. You could even devise an encoded text message system so if you were caught and cops for some reason checked you phone a message saying "u wana b my designatd drivr 2nite?" or something like that would be mistaken for a drunk text message and not code for GTFO!

hehe, I was just going to comment on the dual band moto. For those not in the know, the APX7000 costs around the same as a down payment does- for a HOUSE.
The other type of dual band moto is all mobile (vehicle, base) type setup. Only the APX7000 is multi band, and portable (handheld)
If you are that worried about a location- don't do it. Also, FYI- most burglaries, etc are not even put "over the air" anymore- since most PD's know about scanners. Calls like that go direct to the computer in the car. If the officer does not acknowledge the "computer call", dispatch will "inform" them of a waiting message on their computer...
Back in the 90's and early 2000's using a police scanner did save my butt a few times, but it would not anymore.
I've also recently run into the local police and had to deal with them direct. Yes, I did have a ham radio tuned to the local police frequency, and had a really crap antenna hooked up, so when I heard "chatter" I knew they were close.. (and I did not enter the building)
So overall, if you know how to use it, (radio and.or scanner) and you have proof (on you) you can legally posses such equipment, and your not using it for illegal purposes- than go for it.

I have amateur radio equipment, but the issue is most police departments have gone digital, and the commercial digital radios are super expensive. I have a scanner in my car, but I use that for the fire department I'm on, so I have a reason to have one.

I've no doubt they're "more" expensive, but I didnt realize how pricey the motorolas were. I think we use, Maxon, or Waxon or something. Same one's used for the protection details during the olympics a few games ago. They're great radios. Not Motorola name-brand but they perform very nicely.

P25 radios you can get on the used market pretty cheap. My ASTRO Saber was 225 for the radio, charger, 2 batteries and the nice long Motorola VHF Whip.

And yes, digital radios really aren't expensive these days at all. You can get setup with a digital portable, battery and charger - with encryption - for under $500 these days.
Or you could be a MotoSnob and buy one of these:
