Not at all. Thats a myth.

Motorola's are... at least compared to your average amateur radio.

Maxon radios are garbage.

*shrugs* Haven't really noticed that so much. We've got a repeater running on site though so it might not be as noticeable. What don't you like about them?

Our #1 channel are all tuned to a frequency we're registered with and the same one the repeater runs on. I can pick it up at my house about 12 miles away from the place.

Your average ham radio is not that great in the first place

There are VERY few ham rigs that can hold a candle to commercial gear. The best example is the Yaesu FT280r. That sucker is *the* best ham portable, hands down. Infact, I would say it is on par (or better) than a majority of commercial radios.

Oh completely, but they are also more expensive

I have a Yaesu VX-170 that is a 2M 5W portable, water proof, field programmable, and is built like a tank.

I'm just curious, does anyone carry a police scanner with them when they explore? I used to have a handheld digital scanner and brought it with me on my first exploration, I had it tuned to the city PD while using ear buds.

Any thoughts?

Just a thought if ur an IPhone guy. You can use the scanner app & the police detector app together & have a nifty tool. To the authorities it is just a phone.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

The front end on that radio is awful

Its like driving a Sherman Tank with a VW Beetle engine.

I used to have an iPhone, and actually did have that app, pretty cool stuff. They may have it for Android, I'll have to find out. It's too bad they tend to only have major cities though.

Well, the front end on almost all HAM radios are awful

The FT-2900 actually has a great front end though, best I've seen. I took it up to Mt. Washington which has loads of transmitters and the noise floor barely broke S1, compared to the rest of my rigs which were pegged at 20db+.

I have an droid motorola and i have an app on there called "listen in" and its great. There's a demo version that only lasts for 2 min but if you pay the 99 cents and get the full version it works amazing. Also if there is a branch that is not on the app you can email him and its usually up in like a week.

personally i carried a police scanner the first time i went ueing but i think if you get caught its alot more of a liability. because in ny its legal to have a police scanner but most cops dont know that and chances are if they see you doing something thats frowned upon and your carrying a scanner your going to be locked up for a bit, and second alot of things dont make it to the radio in nyc alot of times if a cop sees somebody do something the only thing your going to hear over the radio is the cop telling central that there going to the precinct with one under. and plus if you get caught you cant plead ignorance with a scanner

Encrypted, or just encoded??

Looks like the two main systems are P-25 & EDACS/ProVoice encoded, but encryption isn't mentioned. You can buy a GE Provoice handheld, and have it programmed for receive-only, if you have the system info. I had a friend who did that 10+ years ago for a PD in Michigan that switched to a Provoice system.

It is generally illegal in most places to use a scanner while commiting a crime.

Also, in NY it isn't legal to have a scanner while in a vehicle...just something to be aware of.

well, there are ways to be able to operate a scanner in your vehicle legally in NY. but thats another discussion.

Amateur Radio license issued by the FCC or a letter of approval from a Police Department.

or be some type of "public safety" official personnel. police, fire, etc. and have the ID or a letter from your agency proving so. heck just get your ham license and keep a copy of the federal law in your glove box. it gives you specific rights that your state can not infringe upon.

You'd have a hard time catching your own call anyways, in most major cities there are some channels and calls for service the chance of you picking up on yours while having it scan all the chans is pretty slim imo.

Um, not even close.

Just listen to the channel/talkgroup for the area you are in.

For example, in Toronto...if you're going to hit up the Malt Plant, you'd want to keep an ear on 14 Division. That's one talkgroup. No chaos at all.
