I've heard kind of negative things about gorillapods; they don't seem stable enough to secure a camera for longer exposures without bending.

As for the cameras, do those prices include a lens? Damn, that's cheaper than I remember.

If I may make a few recommendations, unless you intend on using the video function of the D5000, I would recommend that you consider the Rebel Xsi. The Xsi is cheaper than the D5000, it simply does not have the video function.

Yes, those prices do include the lens. It will say (body only) if it does not include the lens.

I have been using a Gorillapod® lately, and it seems to work well for me. If you buy a DSLR you just need to buy the heavier-duty gorillapod intended for SLRs. I have not had any problems with legs bending.

I would really recommend that you consider the Canon Rebel Xsi, it seems to be in the price range you are looking for.

You can get good pictures out of any camera if you know how to use it right. Save the money and get a basic SLR, the Rebel is an excellent choice. That extra cash will be much more useful to you for traveling.

The Canon G11 is a great little camera. It's got plenty of features including (standard definition) video and can shoot in macro mode. It would likely serve you perfectly.

I had been using a G9 as my carry around camera for two years until it recently refused to wake up. I was heading out of town in under a week so knowing there would be no opportunity to get the G9 repaired in time I picked up a G10 (not likely you'll find any left in southern Ontario - it was replaced by the G11). The major difference between the G10 & the G11 is the reduced megapixel count in the newer G11 - whatever you do, don't get wrapped up in how many megapixels your camera has. My first digital SLR was a Nikon D1 with 2.74MP. Reproduced great in magazines and newspapers and printed just fine up to 11x14 under proper conditions. The G11 dropped to 10-odd MP from the G10's 14-something. So what. Megapaixels are not the be-all end-all.

Really it comes down to; what, ultimately is important to you. Are you going to be buying more lenses down the road? Is ease of carrying important? A G11 is a lot more compact than a Rebel, and as far as creative control is concerned, you have at least as much with the G11; everywhere from full auto to full manual (including manual focus).

I've been a professional photographer for pushing 20 years. I have always been a Nikon guy (currently have a pair of D3's and a D700, plus an IR-only D200 and a D5000 to mess a little with video), but the Canon G-Series kicks serious ass.

I just snagged a xsi w/ IS lens off ebay for 450ish, if you watch adorama or bhphoto's used ads you can find them for similar prices. My favorite part is that the screen turns off when you hold it up to your face!

I also recommend a full tripod, the gorillapod is more of a gimmick for special circumstances than a full-time part, especially if you're going to be shooting at night. Besides, sometimes you need a shooting point higher than 12" off the ground.

Get a used canon 20D. They can be had dirt cheap right about now, and have a magnesium body so they take abuse better than the rebels...in addition to having better controls etc.

The money you save you can put towards glass. For just a little over 500 you could pick up a 20d, and a used tamron 28-75 F2.8. Fast lens for low light, sharp as a tack, and while not true 1:1 macro (I think it does 1:4) it has a min focus distance of 13 inches or so, through the whole zoom range.

I've seen them as low as 250, and I've seen the 20d that low..

That would be my bare min camera setup anyway.

Actually the 10d was the last body to be made of Magnesium. I had one and its amazing. They can be had for less then $200 now. Spend the rest on lenses, which is what you should do if you decided to go with a dslr.

I'd really recommend buying a Nikon D40 or D60 as they're good cameras to use. But since I'm outweighed by Canon, I won't go into great detail about the two. I will say that they are just as good as Canon, but will cost you less $$ in the long run.

My two cents (and owner of three Nikon cameras)...

Going where others can't...

I'd have to concerns - price, portability, macro capability (per what you say).

Olympus E-4/500 series cameras are light and the lenses are really cheap 2nd hand. There is a generic 14-42 that you can get with it that covers general portrait and can go wide (at 14mm). You can get a Macro lens as well, that is pretty decent.

It's the LIGHTEST DSLR on the market (minus the EP-1 series - which are way more expensive, but still amazing). My mom has one from my dad and I a year or so ago for Xmas and she's never looked back.

Great for entry-level and still hav a reasonable amount of $$ after the purchase of this camera + 1 more lens (14-42 + macro) .... to get a Gorilla Pod (buy the airplane grade aluminum one that runs like $69 - all others just suck in comparison).

my 2c. I'm a Canon user - 50D + wides, etc. ... but I really do respect what Olympus has done with the 420 in particular.

I cream, you cream, we all cream for .. white spooge.

I started with a 10, they are a good camera, but their low light performance is their week point. 1600 iso is unsuable, which is why I dumped my 10D for my 30D.

And your wrong about the magnesium. From Canon:

"The Canon EOS 20D features magnesium-alloy body covers for exceeding rigidity and durability"

All the xxD, and XD bodys are magnesium.

I only read the original post. If you want under 500 with a good macro function, go for something Lumix (the glass on those is by Lieca).

Lieca is some dam good stuff, especially for a point and shoot in that price range (and for that price range, if you want macro point and shoot is all you will be able to afford).

That's strange because I had had both, I remembered reading that they stopped using the magnesium bodies on the consumer bodies with the 10d, and left it to the 1 series. That and the 20d always seemed lighter to me, but I think the body size was smaller. They should have kept it that way!
