are there no trains you can catch with your bike to circumvent the bus ?

as was mentioned its a fine line between buses at some points, not including weather and traffic this plan has plenty of potential to fall through.

i think a motorbike trip would be a better plan, can carry more gear, travel longer distances and still visit all the spots you have planned.

I'm not in Europe, there really aren't so many trains on this side of the Atlantic

And yes, a motorbike trip probably would be better, but that I don't have a motorbike (or a license to drive one anyway)

What I mean by that is that you can't write out a plan for a bike trip that says- "Be here at this time, leave 4.3 hours later, ride 10.27 miles" ect. Your fittiness, weather conditions and unfamiliar terrain won't care if you need to "be here now."

I'm not even trying to do this. The only part of the trip that has any precision whatsoever is the first 58 miles by bus.

If it were me, I would start your journey straight from your doorstep. If you are going to be biking on roads the whole way, may as well make it just that. Taking a bus to your starting point is sort of like driving to the gym to walk on the treadmill.

It is but it isn't: it's much harder if not impossible to find places to camp in the first 60 miles than the rest of the trip. So maybe it's like driving to the gym to walk on a treadmill, but it's better than going for a nice relaxing walk on the I-90 thruway.

What I think you need to concentrate your planning on is your gear and route.

Yes; what else is there to plan? I think this is obvious.

the fact that you don't know what tire levers are tells me that you are probably going to be getting in over your head. That being said, let me know if you need a list of shit to get or a question about repairs. I'll try to help you in whatever way I can.

I probably am in over my head; that's usually how I do things.

i don't believe that

most of what is that close to me, is very difficult to get in. While there may still be a few more locations within 10km of me, they are beyond me in difficulty.

with 5 pages of discussion over the course of 5 days, he could have walked to Watertown by now

Yes, but it's the middle of winter now, and I'm going in Spring. It's called preparation.

Then step up your game.

Maybe a Double-negative Nancy: I am defending why I think my plan WOULD work, when most of the "advice" (except for the constructive advice) is doubters thinking that it is impossible.

Then if you think your plan is so solid and you're tired of people telling you otherwise, get off the internet and go do it, maybe?

I have to wait 2 months anyway for the end of school. I can't really go now, otherwise I would...

I haven't read this whole thread, but have you thought about simply using the various legs of the Eric Canal trail to get East? It's like less then a mile from where you live (obviously). It spans from Buffalo through the Roc to Albany and has many paved portions of it.

It would keep you near civilization in case you needed stores/food/assistance/trains/busses/etc while still being able to get out of the cities and camp in wilderness. Also, I'm sure there has to be some historic abandonments along the way from when the canal was booming.

As for getting to Plattsburg. Dude, that's gotta suck biking up the Adirondack Mountains with little training experience (or even around them to the North side). I'm not too much of a biker, but I'd avoid that one as my first trip. There is a hiking trail from Albany to Lake Placid (almost to Plattsburgh) that takes like 4-10 days to hike -- but I'm not sure if it's bikeable.

I'd recommend Roc to Albany and back. It'd still be a helluva a trip.

There really isn't anywhere to camp [legally] along the canal path. I already looked at that before figuring out to go north in the first place.

I already know I'll probably need to walk up the longer hills. Which reduces them to a minor inconvenience and a chance to rest from biking.

But camping in abandonments or urbex in general is okay? I doubt any farmer will find you if you camp in the woods during the sundown hours. Worst-case scenario, you camp in the next farmers land if caught.

The most I've ever biked in a single sitting is 15 miles. But, I can sure as hell tell you that once you get off the bike and break away from the repetitive motion of pedaling your muscles may begin locking up and cramping. It'd be nice to get off the bike, but when you need to get back on it again, it's going to be hell. Hell.

One other suggestion is make sure you have a comfortable seat and your ass is quite used to it before starting the trip. Serious. No one wants to be 3 days from home with a raw ass that you can't sit down on.

I agree with trent on the camping but also camping at Lock 30 in Macedon (Wayne County), Holley Canal Port (Orleans County)

And Green Lakes State Park and Verona Beach State Park.

Camping is permitted on any state land.

Yeah, I'd say this is another reason to start doing longer rides now. You need to condition your ass a bit before you try to impose 250 miles on it. And remember, a comfortable seat is typically a less-comfortable-looking seat. So what you've got on your bike now is probably fine, but riding a couple miles on it is not the same as riding 40, and you will be in tears if you try to do a week of that from a standing start.

I had noticed some of these, but also that there was often a distance of 50 miles or more between (legal) campsites, as opposed to the Adirondacks where I would just be able to get off the road almost anywhere and be in state land, and the east shore of Lake Ontario that has 5 state parks in 44 miles (Selkirk, Southwick, Wehle, Selkirk, Westcott).

I agree with you on that one. I would be out there now doing just that, if we didn't get another 6 inches of snow dumped on us in Rochester last night. It just looks like a melty slushy mess out there now (maybe that's what I should be riding in for practice...)

Yup. You're basically training for a mini-Appalachian Trail...on a bike. From people that have done the trail, beforehand you need to be out there every day training cold or hot, rain or snow. You need to enjoy the shitty conditions and long days now in training or you're not going to enjoy them on your trip and it will suck. Training hard now will also let you know if you're really up for it.

Go ride some trails today. Riding through cold snowy paths might be similar to riding through cold muddy paths in the spring time.

Your college has a fitness center, yes? Start spending 40 minutes a day on a bike there (increase as appropriate).
