Av;

Howcome you took out the "Mark all as read/seen" in the LDB? It was exceedingly useful for those of us who don't care to read every comment from every site.

sorry, but it's too much server drain. one person clicking it would lock the server for about 4 minutes.

i'm going to implement something similar which does it only for the city you're looking at.

it's not really a useful feature anyway, because:

- if you care about reading new things, then you won't be using "mark read", since it will essentially erase the record of what's new and what isn't.

- if you don't care about reading new things, then you're the kind of person who would be using mark read. but why bother? just ignore the blue/green/grey. since you don't care about reading new things, it doesn't matter if it's blue or green or gray. and at least this way the system will keep track of what you have and haven't read.

No.....

If you have the "Mark All as Read", when a new thread/pic/comment comes up, you'll know.

As for there being a server drain - there shouldn't be...I can't possibly understand why it would load down the server for 4 minutes unless it goes to EVERY entry on the DB...pic, thread, etc... and make a comment or something. Would it not be MUCH less server intensive if it were to store all that in a file which is for the user, that way it would just add a comment to the end of a text file which would be referenced each time you view the database.

Or, could you not do it with cookies?

A friend of mine runs a forum that is probably double, if not more, than UER...something like 200 new posts a day - at least. I asked him if his "Mark All As Read" feature bogs anything down...he said no, it doesn't add much drain at all on the server (P3, 500).

AvBoard is the first forum of it's kind that I've ever seen that stores information on EVERY post, every thread, for every user.

The system will remember exactly which posts you have seen and which you haven't. No other board software does this. On other boards, threads are "new" even if you've already read those posts, and once you close the browser, they forget their "new" state, even if you didn't read them.

UER's system is hundreds of kilobytes of information -- way too much to store in a cookie.

For the most part, this system works perfectly fine. There is NO reason to want to "mark read" -- after all, you didn't read it.

Pressing Mark Read in the LDB placed a new entry in the database for just you, one entery for EVERY picture and every comment. We're talking over 30,000 records here. There is no better way to do this, trust me on this one. I know what I am doing.

As for your point: "when a new thread/pic/comment comes up, you'll know." -- If you're using Mark Read, you clearly don't care about any of the existing comments or posts, so why would you care if a new one comes up?

I hate when people have conversations in the photos sections. I dont want to have to read there posts. There are way to many posts to go threw each and every one to show read. Places likey Whitby Psych has conversations in almost every picture post and Iam not interested in having to read them all, and there are ALOT of them too.

then click the "mark read" button for whitby.

or better yet: don't look at the whitby entry at all if you don't want to read it.

I guess I shouuld be thankful to have this board and not complain about it, but I still think its a pain in the ass to go threw every city and mark pictures seen and go threw each thread to show them as seen. It takes to long. I know I will get flamed for this, but hey.... I like the mark all read a hell of alot better.

are you not reading what i am saying?

if you're not going to actually look at the pics, then there's no point in using Mark Read.
