Agreed, I have one, but don't particually need it...

Me too, now that the novelty has worn off and the fact a couple of my entries are not entirely UE related I could do without it. I think some people think it is a status symbol to have more stars. (hmmm, Av has 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 stars!)

The UE encyclopedia is supposed to contain terms that relate directly to UE only, not terms that include how it relates to UE.

Example:

"Keyboard" is not a good entry, even if you put "Many urban explorers use keyboard to type emails to each other" in the entry.

"Respirator" is a good entry, because it's directly related to UE itself.

"Ice" is not a good entry, because if anyone doesn't know what ice is, they need to find a dictionary.

Fine, admittedly ice isn't directly related to UE, even though it's a danger in UE, but stickers are, and that entry got deleted. Stickers aren't exclusive to UE, but then again, niether are respirators - but stickers are a major part of UE, a tradition that has been going since cave clan.

I'll rethink my ice one, but please leave the sticker entry alone. Not just for my sake, but the sake of staying true to your word. I'd hate to think these entries are just getting deleted on whim and opinion.

I've noticed a few instances in recent history in some Colorado locations that someone is taking it upon themselves to update database entries for locations they have never even visited, much less contributed to.

Obviously spelling errors or perhaps new information could warrant such an edit but with no way to tell WHAT was changed (from my point of view anyway) it seems...i dunno....wrong.

Could we either -

1) limit editing rights to the creator - if someone sees something that needs to be changed they can contact the creator or a mod to update it. If the creator is MIA perhaps a mod could re-assign some kind of creator rights to another individual that requests it?

2) Make changes "appended" - so it includes a thread of the original information plus any new information other contributors want to post as opposed to replacing the information.

Obviously, there are lots of places out there that more than one person has visited. There is a lot other explorers could contribute - but the changes I've noticed in the Colorado region are, well, just plain stupid.

re: pimp daddy's post

i think i will simply make the "view differences" thing i coded for the LDB available to you guys -- it lets you see all the changes a location has gone through, so you can see what was changed.

That would be excellent - I'm sure most of the changes are un-important and I wouldn't care less, but I'd like to know.

I vote we ditch the encyclopedia star. It seems to be partially to blame for generally crappy content.

The encyclopedia star seemed like a really great idea, at first. Now it's just kind of like... people racing to find five words so they can have their star... and then demanding their star....

How about air? Is "air" in there? Explorers breathe air!

THD, you might not want to give people ideas like this. Someone will probably make it an entry now.

How about instead of removing these pictureless entries, have a second DB for "rumours" or whatever, for people in the area.. this board could even be linked to from the location boards. Have the enteries alterable to add information and make making directions to the site manditory. Also you could have it so that when pictures get added(if they do), it could get moved over to the main DB.

Would it matter if you were told or not? You'd still be putting effort into the entries, and they'd still be deleted. PM'ing you that they've been deleted is an unnecessary step.

the entry on "fence" was pretty informative, and quite related to UE, for the most part. i've un-removed it.

KP: well, the whole point of the location DB is that it's a community project.

my ideal view of it would be that one person adds a location, and then other people go and check it out too and add their photos.

so a location that's totally empty, maybe someone else should go and check it out too.

It just makes me skeptical when people don't post pics. I could put of all kinds of locations and make them "Drop Everything" when its just a shed out in the middle on nowhere. I like to know something about it before I go so I will know if it will be interesting or not. No sense wasting 6 hours driving for nothing.

Well considering that I'd already made an entry on Gates, and that survived. Fences are a pretty important part of UE if you do alot of the stuff Jester does. I was just thinking along those lines.

But still, I'd like to see something like the current post deleting system we have at the moment being applied to the UE DB and UE Encyclopedia. People deserve to know if their entry has been deleted. You at least owe that to them. Otherwise they might just think it's a forum glitch. (even if this hasn't happened before)

I wasn't aware copying and pasting required a lot of effort.
