| | Urban Explorer Drowns in St Paul < on 4/26/2009 10:09 PM >
| | | KARE 11 is reporting that two urban explorers in West Kittsondale were swept into the Mississippi River this morning by rising water after it began to rain.
Authorities say 29-year-old Nick Breid managed to pull himself onto shore. His 30-year-old friend, Ian Talty of Woodbury, was pulled down river. His cries for help were heard by rowers at the Minneapolis Rowing Club, who quickly called 911...They pulled him to shore near Mississippi River Blvd. and Stanford Ave. Medics performed CPR and transported the victim to HCMC, where he later died. |

| | | Don't know either of them, and don't think they were explorers. Based on the Flickr account seemed like they might be taggers. It's an unfortunate occurrence, but it seems like a gentle reminder to check weather reports before venturing into a large storm drain. EDIT: Prick. | | | There were dozens of emergency vehicles down there this morning. I was wondering what had happened. Today's forecast was for storms...bad call. Unfortunately it cost someone their life.

| | | I just heard about this on flickr. very sad indeed. We had some really nasty, and not forcasted weather yesterday too which is a real reminder to stay safe and don't go out when there is anything forcasted for even a few hours in advance. [last edit 4/27/2009 1:13 AM by Air - edited 1 times]

Guy was definitely an explorer, check out his eye for entropic beauty in his galleries. He's a kindred spirit and he got killed doing what we love.

Either way, it's a tragedy. There is no other way to put it. I obviously didn't look closely at his Flickr, I just saw a bunch of tags, but the macro pictures he took were solid. Fuck, MSP has been taking a beating lately with explorers, and that river.

No, not really. It's more like a dangerous idea to go into a storm drain in a rain storm.

I read this and I'm reminded of part of an article I read a while back, when two utility workers almost died in a drain in St. Paul when it rained. That article said something I've always tried to keep in mind. "Urban explorers never go underground if there is even a hint of adverse weather, and they always have an alternate escape route/plan." Things like this are always a reminder of that, hell, check the weather when you're planning on being above ground, there's no such thing as knowing to much when it come to safety. So keep that in mind, and I sincerely hope that this incident can prevent 100 more just like it.

| | | Two workers did drown last year, while doing repairs on a large storm drain. In that case, the storm came with little warning, and the topside crew apparentlly waited longer than they should have to sound the alarm. The workers were also split up in several areas far from the exits. This weekend's storms were forecast well in advance, a few people cancelled draining trips because of the weather, and the local cave group cancelled some events (limestone caves are nature's storm drains in SE MN). A few minutes to check the weather on your cell phone before going into a tunnel, or even a familliarity with basic cloud conditions, can definitely be the difference between life and death. During even small storms, drains like the one these guys were in collect water from a huge surface area, every roof, street, parking lot, etc runs off into the drains, there's usually little exposed ground for it to soak into. During bigger storms the drains have been known to flood 100 feet up to the surface, with enough pressure to blow off manholes and smash tunnel walls apart (That's what the workers last year were fixing, a huge cavern formed under I94 during such an incident).

| | | I was in a smaller drain on the other side of the city a few years ago on a sunny day and a surprise shower came in. The tunnel went up 2 1/2-3 feet and the water was very difficult to walk in. When we made it back topside, less than 1/4" of rain had fallen and nobody else noticed. This weekend was indeed a tragedy, but Freak's right - the risk of storms all weekend was well-known. We went from 75 degrees to 40 in like 2 days and every forecast called for rain. I cancelled a drain trip myself because of it. It could have and should have been avoided. There's a line between risks that are worth taking and risks that are not.

| | | Little off topic: When reading the article today I saw one of my childhood friend's name in the paper as one of the St. Thomas crew members that found him. Despite my friend's valiant effort he was unable to resuscitate Ian. Through the ordeal I've been rather myopic and have failed to realize that there are others besides the family who are affected, like those who may hold themselves accountable for not getting to Ian sooner. It's just a giant clusterfuck. Offer my condolences as an urban explorer? Just say, "You did your best,"?
