| | | All of what was said previously. The current vacant buildings will be torn down/locked down. The hobby has already increased in popularity; new sites will be hard to come by. More "UE Grails" will be done. Drains will still be there, though there may even be laws passed specifically for them. We might see cases like in Australia, where they cops go and lock up the drains; explorers cut them loose the same day. Eventually the police will give up on drains, seeing as only a minority of even explorers go into them. "XxHardxXxCorexX" Urban Exploring will move towards Infiltration of active sites; because what else fun will be left? If it hasn't already? This will lead to more arrests, more serious charges, more experienced explorers getting out of the hobby. The hobby will reach a peak of total explorers to the point where it is a prominent subculture and then the fad will decline. Leaving the few explorers still interested to go out and find more locations, after everything else has been destroyed. Eventually interest will rise again and the whole hobby will start again.

| | | when u think about it - all the cool sites or "grails" right now were all built a long time ago.. they're cool to explore because of the amazing architecture, or history behind the building.. so once these places are gone, what will be left? when i look around the city today - there isn't much of interest that i would care to see abandoned. just solid square bricked buildings with nothing unique about them.

| | | Some excellent points have been raised that essentially skirt what I personally believe. Many of the places we explore hold our interest because of the old architecture, etc. I don't think we're nearly as interested in "contemporary" abandonments. Anything from our own lifetime. Perhaps newer abandonments will appeal more to younger generations of explorers than they do to us, and it is this that will perpetuate the hobby. I know, personally, once the old (relative to my own advanced age) abandonments are destroyed, I won't likely have much interest in checking out empty WalMarts etc.

I think that the golden age of asylums might be coming to a close (I hope not). Too many Kirkbrides are biting the dust. I predict that the next set of grails will either be college campuses bitten by the economic downturn or ex-military sites. Those are the two biggest campus-style sites currently operational to my knowledge. There has been a potentially unsustainable growth in the number of colleges out there and that may contribute. I also agree with your earlier post that if it becomes excessively popularized that there may be more laws designed to combat exploring. Another, worse side effect could happen though: building owners may more frequently be held responsible when things go wrong. That could get them more vindictive and likely to prosecute or invest in new technology to make exploring harder. Aside: if someone developed a cheap, battery-operated, self-sufficient (maybe cell-uplinked?) alarm exploring would become much harder.

| | | As long as there are humans there will be urban exploration. I agree, though, due to the rise of the internet there will be more sites visited by more people. This will lead to greater vandalism and an increased security presence. In the short term it will lead to a faster demolition of abandoned building beginning already with the most popular, the asylums. This will continue down the list of most visited/dangerous. Of course in the long term, due the increased awareness of historical structures, many building will be saved, having been renovated for business or housing.

| | | Either one of the two : Option A - More buildings become abandoned and the hobby continues to grow ....
Option B - New construction starts and they tear down more spots to make new stuff.

Yep. The true charm lies in the houses that were left abandoned during the late 60's, early 70's... perhaps even the 80's. The old calendars from 1974, porno mags from 1979, tobacco tins, antique dressers, an old organ, a black and white television (that used tubes). The beauty of ugly wallpaper, handcrafted doors, handrailings carved from oak, Victorian home design. That's the charm and those are on the top of my list every single time. Once those are gone, collapsed, or demolished then that leaves modern construction places and there's not a whole lot of charm to finding an old Playstation and 1999 Canadian Tire magazine. Pfft. Sure, newer homes have memories as well but it's the Nintendo Generation, not the trials and tribulations of life during the 1960's-70's which is an era that will never again be repeated.
CHARM
NOT AS MUCH CHARM

| | | 1 year- more buildings will burn and be demo'd. 5 years- UER ceases to exist after a rash of n00bs floods in, and the current awkward generation of 14-30 year olds continue to lose their jobs with the rapidly failing economy, lose access to constant forms of internet, and must make do with trolling from the Apple store. Av no longer makes money off the site as LOLplanes, shitty narrative schemes and haphazardly Photoshopped images replace the occasional worthwhile content on this site. It shuts down after the last "how do you deal with security/vagrants/pooping on models" thread ends in 72 pages of images of facepalms. 10 years- I've probably died under the collapse of some building or another, and some intrepid urban tourist has found my skull and fucks it while documenting the process for the entire internet to see.
And people will finally stop discussing the popularity/future of trudging through abandoned buildings no one cares about.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |
