| | Don't Pierce and Climb < on 3/20/2009 7:46 PM >
| | | I wrecked hard today. And I mean hard. I was running full steam across a steel beam on a building I was climbing and I fell, the good thing is that I did not fall OFF the three inch thick steel beam fell hard into my crotch and pushed my piercing right up. So I never thought of that, I thought I'd be bruised and bloodied if I fell but I never expected that I'd fuck up my piercings. So in light of that, I would like to remind anyone who is climbing or running that those piercings are a bad spot to be hurt on. Be conscious not only of your body when you fall, be conscious not to land on your piercings!

| | | Hahaha, yeah, I hung myself on a thorn vine attached to a fence when the vine somehow went through my lip ring as I jumped it. Although that sure doesn't sound as sexy as monst's suggestion. oh sweet velcro...perhaps some day..

Would studs, not rings, reduce much of this risk?

| | | I'd say yes, pretty much completely. The vine somehow hit my lip ring, and pulled it up, closing the ring against my lip with the vine inside it. I had to slowly pull it out while on the wrong side of a fence on a busy street on the way into an abandonment.

| | | Even with studs/barbells, I've managed to catch just enough of an edge that it pulled my piercings in a way that was uncomfortable. If you are really worried, tape them down/up/over.

Or remove them. Not just piercings, any jewelry can be a hazard. I was climbing over boards once and got my wedding ring hooked into a nail somehow. Was not fun. Glad I didn't jump through the opening.

| | | I have no piercings. But I've gotten my eyelid caught on a pricker bush before. Also not fun. I stopped dead in my tracks... until my dad could come back and remove it. We were fishing a few years ago. Walked through the stream and WHACK! Wind blows the bush right into my face. I was holding myself steady against a tree while in knee deep currents with one hand and holding the pricker bush which was blowing in the springtime wind with the other. I have also gotten a splinter behind my eye when I was five. We thought it would work it's way out... next morning my eye was all swollen and inflamed. Had to go to the hospital for that one. They flushed it out; but it still sucks.

| | | Rings and watches are also no-nos. When I was a firefighter, one of the guys on my rig lost his index finger when his wedding ring caught on a ladder as he fell.

| | | No piercings here either. Not particularly afraid of needles or getting them caught on something - I just never really cared enough I guess. My boyfriend chipped a tooth with his tongue ring in a fight once, so he got rid of that. Never thought about the risks of normal rings. Good point.

| | | Personal information? I am not shy. Ever. LoL. Not giving out my personal info, I'm really open about my piercings and my gender. It's a non issue. But you're not getting my home number or my place of work etc: That is personal info. Barbells or Rings? Neither.
The best way to go on this one is actually OPEN rings OR Bend bars. Why? Well simply what happened to me HURT, and it was a barbell, and well it would not have done that if I were wearing a ring! THIS piercing would have been better off as a ring because it's Not Exposed. It was under my jeans and boxers so the chances of Hooking anything that far down are small. Taking them out is best when you can but this is a month old piercing and would heal over before the night is out. Don't switch up to plastic. If they break in your skin it sucks. Open rings are awesome for nose/lip/brow because if something gets caught in it then it easily finds its way out the open portion of the ring which is sometimes just a slightly bent barbell. The bend in the barbell makes it less prone to being shoved into the skin. The force will just reroute itself and make the piercing rotate in the hole. Which is way better if you ask a guy that just got slammed in the crotch. Either way I use protection down there when I climb now. Piercing or not, that hurt! Yea if you want to wear a good luck charm or jewelry put it in a bag in your pocket, or have it tattooed !

| | | The open ring on my lip is what caught the vine actually. The vine went through the open part, grabbed a hold of the ring and pulled it shut against my lip, lol. Not that they aren't the way to go. I prefer the horseshoe type to the one where you snap the ball in. Much easier to manage. Also, a lot of private user boards are open to non-full members. You're already a member of the site. Have a look around in the private boards section to see what you can subscribe to! Just click "subscribe".

| | | Ouch! That's got to hurt. Remove all jewelry when climbing. Rings can cost you a finger if you jump and then gets hung up on something solid that doesn't move like a nail. Happens more often then some might think.

| | | Is this not just a poorly veiled post by the OP to allure to the fact that he's got his old man pierced and await the proceeding replies oohs and arghs and that's gotta hurts? For surely there needn't be a thread started to remind people with piercings that getting them caught up, snagged or forcefully whacked on impact is a bad move? Plah . . .
